Barry Hearn’s journey into sports promotion began in the early 1970s with snooker at the time when he bought a snooker hall in Romford, Greater London while working as a property investor. His purchase of the property happened to coincide with the BBC’s promotion of snooker and its televising on colored television. This made the sport a huge attraction to the public and further prompted him to invest more in the sport. By 1974, Hearn began promoting snooker events of amateur snooker players who went on to become professionals. He later started managing a number of high profile snooker players under his company Matchroom Sport in the 1980s.

Following the snooker boom of the 70s and 80s, Barry Hearn moved into boxing in 1987. His first promotion was the bout between Frank Bruno and Joe Bugner which was held at White Hart Lane in October that year. He has since venturing into boxing gone into other sports like darts, football, fishing, and table tennis. In football, Barry Hearn served as the chairman of Leyton Orient football league club from 1995 to 2014. In darts, he is the chairman of one of darts’ two governing bodies, the Professional Darts Corporation. He has in the past also served as the chairman of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA).
