He was born in the town of Abbott in Texas to parents named Myrle Marie (née Greenhaw) and Ira Doyle Nelson but would become a product of a broken home. The first to leave was his mother and later his mechanic father who left to marry another woman, leaving Nelson and his siblings which at the time included his sister Bobbie to the care of his grandparents.
