He started rapping when he was fourteen and used to go by the name “EZ Mac”. His first project, a mixtape came in 2007, when he was 15. It was titled But My Mackin’ Ain’t Easy. At the time, Miller was also a member of the rap duo The Ill Spoken along with fellow Pittsburgh emcee, Beedie. They had a mixtape together titled How High in 2008. The rapper released his next two mixtapes Prelude to Class Clown and The High Life in 2009.
Mac Miller signed to Rostrum Records, a notable independent record label in 2010. He had caught the attention of the label’s president Benjy Grinberg, while he was working on his K.I.D.S mixtape. At the time, he was getting the attention of other record companies but decided to go with Grinberg. His two main reasons were that Rostrum operated from his hometown and had ties to big acts like .

In 2013, Miller released his second album titled Watching Movies With the Sound Off, a project he described as showing his vulnerability and being introspective. It debuted at No.3 on the Billboard 200 chart and moved 101,000 units in its first week. He also released an instrumental-only mixtape, Run-On Sentences, under his production pseudonym, Larry Fisherman. On February 26, 2013, he premiered his first reality TV series. In 2012, during the early years of his fame, he got addicted to “purple drank”, the street name for a mixture of promethazine and codeine. He used it to cope with the pressure and demands of the industry and his career. Eventually, he weaned himself of it in November 2012 before he started working on his reality show.
He has also been sued severally for copyright infringement on two of his mixtapes. He was arrested along with some of his friends for possession of marijuana in 2011 while on tour. They were released the next day, however.
