Melissa Suzanne McBride was born on the 23rd of May 1965 in Lexington, Kentucky. She was born to John Leslie McBride and Suzanne Lillian (née Sagley). Her mother who was born in 1927 passed away in 2018. McBride inherited her artistic side from her mother who studied at the historic Pasadena Playhouse. Her father was a businessman. McBride, who was born as the last child of her parents had three siblings, unfortunately, they are all late. She had two brothers John Michael (1957-1990), Neil Allen (1960–2008) and one sister Melanie Suzanne who passed in 2012, at the age of 50.

Melissa McBride attended Richard J. Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In 1991, she began her acting career in Atlanta, Georgia where she had moved. Like most actresses just starting out their careers, Melissa began by taking up commercial gigs. She featured in a commercial for Rooms To Go, a Florida-based furniture store chain. Melissa would then become a spokesperson for Ford Motors.

Beginning in 1993, McBride began appearing in TV shows and landed her debut playing the role of Darlene Kellogg in an episode of Matlock. Throughout the 1990s, Melissa continued to appear in TV shows, including; In the Heat of the Night, American Gothic, Profiler, Walker, Texas Ranger, and Dawson’s Creek. She acted in TV films like A Season in Purgatory, Pirates of Silicon Valley, and Living Proof.

Starting from the year 2000, McBride began working as a casting director while still based in Atlanta. While working as a casting director, she appeared in a handful of films, mostly short films, they include; comedy-drama film, The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys, Nailed!, The Mist, The Promise, and Lost Crossing.

While working on The Mist in 2007, McBride met and began working with Frank Darabont, the creator of The Walking Dead in 2007. When Darabont wanted to cast for The Walking Dead, he included McBride in one of the roles which would come to be the biggest of her career, gaining her widespread recognition. McBride’s role as Carol was first a recurring role in the show’s first season but was later promoted to a regular role starting from the second season.

Her role as Carol has earned her rave reviews from critics. She won her first award for the show in 2012, a Satellite Award for  Best Cast – Television Series which she shared with the rest of the cast. Her first individual award for the show came in 2014 when she won Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama. In total, McBride has won 7 awards for her role as Carol Peletier.

Though McBride dedicates most of her time to filming The Walking Dead, she still manages to squeeze out time for other gigs. She had a role in the 2014 science fiction film, The Reconstruction of William Zero. She also appeared in the narrative film, The Happys. McBride has appeared in episodes of Conan, as well as, Fear the Walking Dead, the spin-off of The Walking Dead. She voiced a role in the 2017 episode of Robot Chicken.

During her years working as a casting director, Melissa McBride worked on films like; The Last Adam, The Promise, Golden Minutes, The Party, and Broken Moment.
