7. Sweet Land (2005)

Sweet Land is a 2005 American independent period drama and an adaptation of Will Weaver’s 1989 short story, A Gravestone Made of Wheat. The film chronicles the life of Inge Altenberg (Elizabeth Reaser), a young German woman as she arrives in rural Minnesota. Upon arrival, she meets a Norwegian farmer Olaf Torvik, who is a fellow immigrant. After Olaf’s parents concluded plans for the two to marry, the problem arises when Inge doesn’t have proper papers. Despite being unwed, the couple continues to live and farm together amid several red flags from the people of the town.
Although Alex Kingston played a minor role in this film, the movie received a critical claim for its storyline. It bagged several awards including the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature and Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature at Hamptons Internal Film Festival and Florida Film Festival, respectively. Rated 6.9/10 on IMDb, Alpha Dog follows a drug-dealing delinquent named Johnny Truelove who lives the high life in LA, partying with peers and getting a steady dope supply from his father, Sonny. However, when a dangerous customer refuses to pay, Johnny and his right-hand man named Frankie kidnap the junkie’s younger brother. They intended to keep the kid hidden and happy until they get the cash. Unfortunately, the twist sets in when the police got involved.
