Ali Velshi is a Canadian-born broadcast journalist, TV host and author. His longrunning career as a TV journalist has seen him work for major television networks such as CNN, Al Jazeera America and MSNBC. Velshi headlined his own news show Ali Velshi on Target on Al Jazeera America until the channel ceased operations in 2016.
He has served as a senior economic and business correspondent for NBC News since joining the NBC network in October 2016. He currently hosts MSNBC Live with Ali Velshi and also co-anchors the business show Velshi & Ruhle on MSNBC alongside .
Ali Velshi’s Biography
Ali Velshi was born in Nairobi, Kenya on October 29, 1969, to Mila and Murad Velshi. However, he was raised in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He schooled at Toronto’s Northern Secondary School where he served as the school president. For college, he attended Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario where he bagged a degree in religious studies.
Velshi began his professional career as a broadcast journalist in his home city of Toronto. He first gained employment as a General Assignment reporter for CFTO. He worked for CablePulse 24 as a business reporter and anchor after which he joined another Toronto-based station CityTV. In 1999, Velshi joined Canada’s foremost all-business news channel Report on Business Television, (now BNN – Business News Network) and there, he had the privilege of anchoring the country’s first prime-time business program The Business News.
He relocated to the US in 2001 after which he joined New York-based business channel CNNfn and hosted some of the network’s most notable programs. Velshi was ultimately reassigned to the main CNN network following the shutdown of CNNfn in December 2004. In addition to his regular duties as a business anchor and reporter, he hosted CNN’s The Turnaround, a reality TV show centered on small businesses. He served on some of the network’s high-profile business news programs including The Situation Room, American Morning, Your Money and World Business Today.
In April 2013, Ali Velshi left CNN for then newly-formed Al Jazeera America (AJAM) becoming the first on-air personality to be hired by the latter channel. His daily weekday show, Real Money with Ali Velshi was launched in August 2013 and it was later relaunched as Ali Velshi on Target. Al Jazeera America was closed down in April 2016 bringing an end to Velshi’s 3-year stint with the channel. He got hired by MSNBC in October 2016.

Ali Velshi comes from an Ismaili Muslim family of Gujarati Indian origin. His grandparents had settled in South Africa several years before he was born. Owing to the Apartheid regime, Ali’s parents were forced to flee South Africa and move to Nairobi, Kenya where he was born.
In search of a new home, the family moved again to Pakistan, England and to New York City before eventually settling in North Toronto, Canada. There, he was raised alongside his sister, Ishrath. His father, Murad Velshi, made history in 1987 when he became the first Canadian of Indian origin to be elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario.

Back in 2009, Ali Velshi got married to Lori Wachs, a New York-born investment manager and finance expert. Interestingly, the duo first met on CNN when Wachs was featured as a guest on Velshi’s show. Wachs holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. She is a founding member and former president of Cross Ledge Investments, a hedge fund based in Philadelphia. She joined New York-based Springboard Growth Capital in January 2018.
