Angel Di Maria is a world-renowned Argentine footballer, who plays for the Argentine National team and Ligue 1 serial winners Paris Saint-Germain. Di Maria first started out as a flying winger but has had to adapt himself over the years to an attacking and at times central midfield player.
Bio
Angel Di Maria was born on the 14th of February in 1988 in the city of Rosario in Argentina. At an early age, the recommendation by the family doctor was that he should be encouraged to sign up for football due to his unusually high levels of activity.
His parents duly obliged and Angel Di Maria was signed up to football at age three. His parents found it had to keep up with Di Maria’s new hobby being football, due to their limited income.
Di Maria began his football career at age four when he joined his local team Rosario Central. He made his professional debut for his club on the 14th of December 2005 but had to wait about a year for his first goal on the 24th of November 2006. After representing his country in the FIFA U-20 World Cup, Di Maria firmly put his name on the map globally and attracted moves from various European clubs which included English giants Arsenal although the move ultimately collapsed because of British labor laws.
Di Maria finally got his move to Europe in July 2007 when Portuguese club Benfica paid his home team Rosario €6 million. He was earmarked as a replacement for the departing club captain Simao who was moving to Atletico Madrid. He impressed so greatly in two years at the club that he was rewarded with another contract in 2009, a deal which was to expire on the 30th of June 2015 with a release clause of €40 million.
It was yet another FIFA competition that helped Di Maria’s career prospects. After his exploits at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, he attracted the attention of the then Real Madrid Manager Jose Mourinho who signed the winger for €25 million on a five-year contract.
He made his debut for the club in a friendly match in 2010 against Mexican side America and scored his first goal in another friendly against Spanish side Hercules. Di Maria had a lot of golden moments in a Real Madrid shirt but his finest moment came in the 2013-14 Champions final against local neighbors Atletico Madrid, when he helped the Spanish giants to La Decima – a tenth European triumph.
After yet another FIFA World Cup this time in Brazil, Di Maria earned another big move to English Giants Manchester United when newly appointed Dutch manager Louis Van Gaal shelled out a then-record transfer of £59.7 million. The Argentine inherited the iconic number 7 jersey at Old Trafford. He made his debut for United in a goalless draw against Burnley and scored his first goal for the club from a direct free kick against QPR.
Ultimately the move to England never worked out for Di Maria with plaudits calling him the worst signing of the season. After another international final defeat this time in the Copa America against Chile, Di Maria joined French Moneybags PSG on the 2nd of August 2015 for a fee thought to be around £44 million on a four-year contract. Di Maria made his club debut against Monaco and scored his first goal for his new club in the Champions League against Malmo.
