ASAP Rocky belongs to the class of 2011 breakout emcees, although he started rapping in 2007. However, he has since established himself as a force to contend with in the rap game. Asap is a songwriter, rapper, director, and record producer. He joins the likes of Mac Miller to show his penchant for using alter-egos by doing his record producing under the pseudonym Lord Flacko.
All of ASAP’s projects since he burst onto the scene have been released to critical acclaim. Two of those albums have also made it to the top spot of the Billboard 200. ASAP Rocky was born to an African American mother and a Barbadian father. He was born Rakim Mayers in Harlem, Manhattan on October 3, 1988, and was named after the rapper Rakim, who was a member of the duo rap group “Eric B. & Rakim”. The rapper had an elder sister, Erika, and an elder brother too.
It was his elder brother who was his earliest rap inspiration and the biggest reason Rakim started rapping at the young age of 9. In his early teenage years, he would endure two family tragedies. First, his father went to prison in 2000 for selling drugs and his elder brother was gunned down in Harlem a year later.
These tragedies made Rakim resolve to take rapping more seriously. He moved around with his mom and sister for a while living in homeless shelters. Rakim also had a stint as a crack peddler in the Bronx when he was just 15. He eventually moved to midtown Manhattan, away from his family.
Besides his brother, Rocky was influenced by heavyweights such as Three 6 Mafia, Wu-Tang Clan, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, The Diplomats, Run DMC and others.
ASAP’s first stint in his rap career with a group known as A$AP Mob. It is an eclectic mix of people who are interested in music, fashion, style, and art. In 2011, ASAP started forging a solo career path with the release of two singles in July and August. Both singles Purple Swag and Peso quickly became street anthems and received airplay on New York’s Hot 97 radio station.
The release of his first mixtape Live. Love. A$AP in October led to Rocky signing a $3 million record deal with RCA Records and Polo Grounds Music. He started A$AP Worldwide, his own label, with A$AP Mob member, A$AP Yam. He also received his first nomination on December 5, for BBC’s Sound of 2012 poll. ASAP Rocky opened for Drake’s Club Paradise Tour in February 2012 and performed at the Pitchfork Music Festival in July. On August 21, he made his television debut on Late Night with and also performed on stage with at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards.
He released a mixtape with his group A$AP Mob in August 2012 titled Lords Never Worry. He ran a 40-date tour in November and September to promote his upcoming album, Long. Live. A$AP, the album was released on January 15, 2013, and entered at No.1 on the Billboard 200, selling 139,000 units its first week. Two months later, the album had sold 500,000 units and was certified gold by the RIAA.
His second studio album, At. Long. Last. A$AP was released on May 26, 2015, a week earlier than it was scheduled to because it had leaked online a day earlier. This became his second consecutive album to hit the top spot on the Billboard 200 charts, shipping 110,000 copies in its first week. It also debuted at number one in Canada and sold 256,000 units in the UK in its first month. The album sales would later decline, however, eventually becoming ASAP Rocky’s lowest selling album.
Rocky has been a guest on shows such as The Tonight Show with “The Roots” and the “Carpool Karaoke” session of The Late Late Show with . He has also worked on a number of singles with artists like , , and .
In 2015, ASAP Rocky made a cameo appearance in the independent comedy-drama, Dope. On January 21, 2015, during its premiere at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, Rocky performed his single Multiply in honor of his friend and mentor A$AP Yams who had died three days prior.

Rocky has an elder sister who goes by the name, Erika B. Meyers. While Rocky’s biological name was inspired by Rakim of “Eric B. & Rakim”, what is not known is that his sister’s name seems to have come from the other half of the group, Eric B. His mom was a die-hard fan of the 80s rap group, so their names do not really come as a surprise.
ASAP has also had his share of relationships too. His first public relationship was in 2011, with the female Australian emcee Iggy Azalea. The couple broke up in 2012 and he moved on to the American model, Chanel Iman. This relationship also didn’t last very long and ended sometime in 2014.
