Ashanti was born on October 13, 1980, in Glen Cove, New York, United States. Her full name is Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas. She is American by nationality and belongs to the African-American ethnic group. Her birth sign is Libra. 

Her mother’s name is Tina Douglas and her father’s name is Ken-Kaide Thomas Douglas. Her mother was a dance teacher by profession and her father was a well-established singer. She grew up with her only sister, Kenashia Douglas in her hometown New York. She had a huge passion for singing from her young age.

Talking about her education she attended Glen Clove High School. For her higher education she joined Hampton University located in Virginia. She quit the university after a year of studying to focus on her singing career.

Afterward, she was seen in the “The Fast and the Furious” soundtrack that was released in 2001. The following year, she appeared on Ja Rule’s “Always on Time” and Fat Joe’s “What’s Love”.

She signed a contract with the record label named Murder Inc. Shortly afterward, she released her first single titled “Foolish” which reached the 10th spot on US Billboard Hot 100.

Later that year, she released her first album “Ashanti”. She achieved a milestone in her singing career from that album as it sold 500 Thousand copies in its initial week. The album grabbed the number one spot on the US Billboard 200.
