He was born on November 7, 1951, in Torrance California to his parents whose names are not known. Growing up, he attended North Torrance High School, where he started to nurture his inclination to sports. Chris Mortensen actively participated in different kinds of sports including basketball, football, baseball, and many others.

After high school, he proceeded to El Camino College in Los Angeles. During this time the Vietnam War was imminent and Chris had to join the Army and served his country for two years. Afterward, he ventured into his career as a sports journalist. He made a decision to follow that path after he could no longer participate in high school sports; he was older after all and growth is an inevitable part of life.

Chris Mortensen started out by working with Daily Breeze newspaper in Torrance. He then proceeded to Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper, where he covered and provided various sports reports including that of the Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta Braves, the NFL and many others. Afterward, he proceeded to The National and covered NFL (1989-90) for the outfit. After his stint at The National, he made his way in 1991 to ESPN where he worked the longest.

Mortensen has covered notable programs for the sports network and has gained widespread recognition for his works. He has reported for programs like NFL GameDay, Sunday NFL Countdown, Monday NFL Countdown, SportsCenter and lots more. He has played a significant role in the outfit’s coverage of the NFL Draft as well as other notable events.

Chris Mortensen has to his name over 15 awards for his contributions on the sports media platform. One of them include the National Headliner Award for Investigative Reporting in all categories.

Personal Life

Chris Mortensen is happily married to his wife, Micki Mortensen. The couple got married in 1984 and have been together since then. Meeting her back in 1983 was one of the best things that ever happened to Chris and all he wanted to do was make Micki who was then working for the Braves, his wife.

Things indeed happened so fast and the two tied the knot only a year later. Together they have a son named Alex (born in 1985). Alex Mortensen is a former quarterback and also works as a coach for the Birmingham Iron of the Alliance of American Football.

Health Update On His Throat cancer, How Is He Doing?

To be precise, Chris Mortensen made the announcement himself on January 15, 2016, revealing that he was diagnosed with a stage 4 throat cancer. He had made the announcement on the ESPN.com show adding that he would be away from the screen to tend to his health. It was indeed an unwelcome and sad development for Chris and everyone around him.

The sports analyst immediately started to undergo chemotherapy as he made frequent visits to the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. After a while, the cancer seemingly disappeared. It was indeed a huge and pleasant surprise to all as Chris announced in August 2016 that the cancer on his throat as well that of his tongue had disappeared.

He returned to his coverage in September that same year and was a delight to behold. However, the dreaded illness returned in November 2016 and this time around it was in his left lung. A  photo of him emerged showing that he had lost weight and had burns from radiation treatment around his neck.

Chris Mortensen is still undergoing treatment. He is also battling the anomalies that come with the deadly disease especially his severe weight loss. But most importantly what keeps him going is that he has all the love and support from his wife and son.
