6 Things To Know About Christopher Lambert
1. Christopher Lambert Was Born in the United States But Was Raised In Europe
On the 29th day of March 1957, in Great Neck, New York, Christopher Lambert was born Christophe Guy Denis Lambert to Yolande (de Caritat de Peruzzis) and Georges Lambert-Lamond. Not much is known about his mother unlike his father, a French Jew, who was known to have worked as a diplomat at the United Nations Headquarters in Manhattan, New York.
After having spent a number of his infancy years in the Big Apple, Lambert and his parents moved to Europe, first settling in Geneva, Switzerland before ultimately returning home to Paris, France when their son was in his teenage years.
2. His Break In Hollywood Came As A Direct Result Of His Myopia
Lambert is known to suffer from profound Myopia as his sight is so bad that he cannot see without his glasses. For some unknown reason, he is also unable to wear contact lenses, making him virtually blind whenever he is without his glasses.
Many people might think that the fact that he suffers from such a disease might restrict him from having to appear in a wide range of roles. This is, however, not the case as his eyes were said to be the main reason why he was able to get his breakthrough in Hollywood after having already begun acting in France.
In the late 70s and early 80s, Christopher Lambert appeared in a number of French films like Ciao, les mecs (1979), Le bar du téléphone (1980), Une sale affaire (1981), and Putain d’histoire d’amour (1981), where he played supporting roles. Hoping to move from the European acting scene to Hollywood, Lambert auditioned for the role of Tarzan in Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes, the film adaptation of novelist Edgar Rice Burroughs’ iconic character.
Director Hugh Hudson, who had just completed the work on his Academy Award-winning film, Chariots of Fire (1981), was hired by Warner Bros to direct the film. Hudson opted to use a young and unknown actor for the titular role, which Lambert auditioned for and got largely because he always seemed to be looking into the distance when he took off his glasses. While Lambert went on to suffer many injuries while performing his own stunts due to his poor sight, the movie was released in 1984 to critical acclaim, announcing the actor’s arrival in the American film industry.
In 1985, Christopher Lambert picked up his first and only award to date, a César Award for Best Actor in Luc Besson’s comedy-drama film Subway. Other notable films he has since appeared in include Highlander (1986), To Kill a Priest (1988), Why Me? (1990), Mortal Kombat (1995), Beowulf (1999), and Druids (2001).
