Clay Matthews is the perfect example of the scientific claim that good sporting genes can be passed on from parent to child, or in his case, from grandparent to parent and then to the child. The talented American football player who plays the outside linebacker position has been a star player for the Green Bay Packers in the National Football league ever since he was drafted by the team in 2009.
Matthews has played in six Pro Bowl events and was instrumental in his team’s victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers at Super Bowl XLV. Some of his other accolades are the 2010 Butkus Award, 2010 First-team All-Pro, 2012 and 2014 Second-team All-Pro, and the 2010 Professional Football Writers of America NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
Early Life and Education
Clay Matthews was born William Clay Matthews III, the son of Leslie and Clay Matthews Jr., on the 14th of May, 1986, in Los Angeles, California where he was raised. He attended Agoura High School where he played football under his father who was the team’s defensive coordinator. However, because Matthews was physically a late bloomer, he barely got game time until his senior year which meant he did not garner interest from any reputable college programs.
He, however, chose to attend his father’s alma mater, University of Southern California, where he hoped to become a walk-on on its football team. He remained a non-athletic scholar in the school for two years while working hard to break into the team. His dreams eventually came through in the beginning of his senior year when he was granted full athletic scholarship status and was listed as his team’s reserve linebacker.
Following an injury to the starter, Matthews got his chance and was able to leave a good impression on his coaches and scouts. The one-time late bloomer was now considered a top draft pick who had the versatility to play more than just the outside linebacker position, prompting the Green Bay Packers to take a gamble on him.
Is Clay Matthews Married? Who is His Wife
Clay Matthews is married. The Super Bowl XLV winner is married to Casey Noble, an interior designer and television personality that is best known for being one of the hosts and designers on HGTV‘s show Design On A Dime. Noble, who is a graduate of George Mason University and also attended the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandise (FIDM), was born on the 2nd of May, 1978, making her eight years her husbands senior.
The couple got married in July 2015 after having dated for a while. They were first spotted cozying up to each other at a National Hockey League game in March 2013 and then at a charity event a few months later although it was revealed that the pair had been an item long before that but chose to keep things under wrap. Together, the couple has two children; a son named William Clay IV, born in February 2015, and a daughter named Madeline Joy, born in November 2016.
Family – Sister, Brother
Clay Matthews comes from a family of professional American football players, which goes as far back to his grandfather, Clay Matthews Sr., the patriarch of the Matthews family. Matthews Sr. played for the San Francisco 49ers in the 1950s before the Korean War. His father, Clay Matthews Jr. was a first-round draft pick and played for the Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons. His uncle, Bruce Matthews, was also a remarkable player who played for the Houston Oilers (now Tennesse Titans).
Following in the footsteps of Clay and other Matthew family members that played professional football is his younger brother, Casey Matthews. Casey, who was born on the 16th of January 1989, was a fourth-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2011 NFL Draft. He spent four seasons with the Eagles before signing with the Minnesota Vikings as a free agent in 2015 but was however placed on injured reserve.
Clay and Casey Matthews have a sister; Jennifer Matthews, who although does not play football, is still attached to the game as she has done some modeling work for the NFL in the past.
