Sparta Rotterdam: Dumfries, a Rotterdam native, began his football career with Spartaan ’20, where he lasted two years before being discharged for being “not deemed talented enough as a youngster” and was disliked by teammates and even trainers. Shortly after, Dumfries entered Smitshoek, having to “sign up for himself,” and spoke about his experience there. Dumfries signed a contract extension with the club on November 7, 2015, keeping him at the club until 2019.

Heerenveen: Dumfries announced in October 2016 that he wanted to leave Sparta Rotterdam in order to play at a better level. Dumfries signed a four-year contract with Heerenveen in the summer of 2017 to replace Belgium-bound Stefano Marzo. He made his Heerenveen debut, starting the season opener against FC Groningen and setting up two goals in a 3–3 tie. Dumfries scored three goals, twice against ADO Den Haag and one against PSV Eindhoven, between August 26 and September 10, 2017.
