Donte DiVincenzo’s Bio

Donte DiVincenzo was born in Newark, Delaware on the 31st day of January 1997. As a child, he loved sweating it out, dribbling up and down a pitch or bouncing and dunking a ball on the court but soccer was his main sport. However, as he watched players dazzle big crowds across the Big East, he became amazed at their ability to put the ball through the hoop from 25 feet and gasped at their athleticism. Consequently, he had to decide between the two sports that have always held him; basketball and soccer.

Going into high school, Donte quit soccer for basketball, pushed by his love for the game and determined to play at the next level. He attended a Roman Catholic independent school for boys, Salesianum School located in Wilmington, Delaware. Shortly after, he made it to the elite circles with his scoring ability and shooting touch and led the team to two consecutive state championships.

In his junior year, he averaged 15.8 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game and played AAU basketball with  and other area prospects in the Nike EYBL for Team Final. as a senior, Donte averaged 22.9 points, 9.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game and was named Delaware Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association’s Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year in 2015.

Following an explosive high school career, he committed to Villanova University Wildcats where he played for three seasons and won two National Championships (2016 and 2018) with the team. During his collegiate career, he was nicknamed Big Ragu by sportscaster Gus Johnson – ostensibly due to his Italian root and red hair after a game-winning tip-in in a game on January 29, 2017, against the University of Virginia.

As a true freshman, he played nine games before receiving a medical redshirt due to a fractured fifth metatarsal bone in his right foot. In his redshirt freshman season, Donte averaged 25.5 minutes per game while putting up 8.8 points off the bench. In turn, he was named to the Big East All-Freshman team and the Philadelphia Big Five Rookie of the Year. During his redshirted sophomore season, he averaged 13.4 points per game, 4.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists. At the end of the regular season, he was named Big East Sixth Man of the Year.

His determination also made him a key player off the bench for Villanova’s national championship team. He scored a career-high 31 points in the title game against Michigan, along with five rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Following the championship, Donte DiVincenzo was named the NCAA Most Outstanding Player of 2018 Final Four. Also, he scored the most points (15) in an NCAA Final Four game for a player coming off the bench.

Even though he’s almost exclusively a bench player, having only started 12 of his 85 career games, a willingness to come off the bench and succeed helped set him apart.

NBA Career

Donte announced he would declare for the 2018 NBA draft on April 19, 2018, though without hiring an agent, thereby leaving open the possibility of a return to Villanova. Nevertheless, he later forewent his final two years of college eligibility and remained in the draft as well as hired an agent. During the draft combine, he displayed the right athleticism that scouts crave for. Additionally, his wide range of skills as a guard, ability to make plays off of the dribble, deep and long distance shooting range, as well as his tough-mindedness, make him an asset to any team.

On June 21, 2018, DiVincenzo became the second of four Villanova players to be drafted that year. He was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks with the seventeenth overall pick and signed with the team on July 10, 2018. With the Bucks, his skill set should fit well with All-Star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo‘s game.
