Duje Caleta-Car (born September 17, 1996) is a Croatian footballer who now plays as a center-back for Ligue 1 club Marseille and the Croatia national team. He was part of the Croatian team that finished second to France in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Duje Caleta Car’s Career

Caleta-Car joined FC Liefering from FC Pasching in 2014. On July 25, 2014, he made his Austrian Football First League debut for FC Liefering against FAC Team für Wien. Salzburg achieved their finest European season ever in the 2017–18 season. They won their Europa League group for a record fourth time before defeating Real Sociedad and Borussia Dortmund in the quarter-finals, advancing to their first-ever UEFA Europa League semi-final. On 3 May 2018, he was a part of Olympique de Marseille’s Europa League semi-final, which ended in a 12–12 away loss but a 3–2 aggregate triumph, securing a berth in the 2018 UEFA Europa League Final.

Caleta-Car signed a five-year contract with Olympique de Marseille on July 20, 2018, for a price of €19 million. Caleta-Car was handed the number 15 team shirt upon his arrival. He scored his first goal for Marseille on September 29, 2019, in a 1–1 draw with Rennes. Caleta-Car scored a brace in Marseille’s 3–2 win over Brest at the start of the 2020–21 season, converting assists from Florian Thauvin. Liverpool made a £23 million bid for his services at the end of the January 2021 transfer window, but the deal fell through because Marseille didn’t have enough time to find a successor.

Duje Caleta Car’s International Career

As a replacement for injured Jozo Imunovi, Caleta-Car was called up to the senior national squad for the Euro 2016 qualifying matches against Bulgaria and Malta in October 2015. He was named to the Euro 2016 squad’s initial 27 players but was left out along with midfielder Alen Halilovi and goalkeeper Dominik Livakovi.

He was chosen to Croatia’s preliminary 32-man squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia in May of 2018. In a friendly encounter against Brazil on June 3, he made his international debut, replacing Vedran Orluka in the 52nd minute.

Caleta-Car was eventually chosen for the 23-man squad that traveled to Russia for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. In Croatia’s last group game, a 2–1 triumph over Iceland, he made his World Cup debut. Croatia would go on to finish second in the tournament, losing 4–2 in the final at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow against France.

He rejected to join Croatia’s squad for the 2019 UEFA Under-21 Euro in June 2019, claiming weariness and the club’s requirement that he recover for the upcoming season as reasons. The genuine reason for his absence was a trip to the Maldives with his club teammate Nemanja Radonji.

He was the only outfield player not granted even a minute of playing time in senior Croatia’s June matches against Wales and Tunisia as a disciplinary measure, and he was completely dropped ahead of September matches against Slovakia and Azerbaijan. He denied going on vacation in an interview with Sportske Novosti, saying that the only reason he didn’t participate in the tournament was that his club coaches Andoni Zubizarreta and André Villas-Boas advised him to do so because his previous season wasn’t up to par, partly due to his participation in the World Cup the summer before and that it wasn’t his personal wish.

He further claimed that Croatia U21 coach Nenad Graan “lied and disappointed him,” that reading “media lies” about the holiday “hurt him,” and that he accepted senior Croatia squad manager Zlatko Dali’s decision to dismiss him from the team.

Following the bans of usual starting defenders Dejan Lovren and Domagoj Vida, he was called up again ahead of Croatia’s November friendlies against Slovakia and Georgia. He was a starter in the critical encounter against his previous team, which Croatia won 3–1 and qualified for Euro 2020. He was a good center-back footballer during the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
