Eddie George has done it all and seen it all as far as the National Football League (NFL) is concerned. The retired American football running back has been at the top of the game and played with the bigwigs in the league before deciding it was time to hang his boots in 2006. Born Edward Nathan George Jr., Eddie could be described as a success when in reference to athletes who have graced the NFL stage and who could be role models to the younger sporting generation.
Edward Nathan George Sr. and Donna George, who are the parents of the Hall of Famer welcomed baby Eddie George on September 24, 1973, when he was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His father was not a part of his growing up days as he was raised by his mother Donna with help from his older sister, Leslie George. To provide for the family. Donna would work several jobs. She combined the job of being a mother, with being a fashion model, a flight attendant (at Trans World Airlines), and a production manager (at Ford Aerospace).
She was a hard worker and always encouraged her children to be too. Today, Eddie George after a successful career in the NFL is now doing well as an actor cum producer. It is a fact that transiting from NFL helmets and cleats to nice suits and ties is not as easy as Eddie has made it look but he too has his upbringing to thank for being able to do that. When he was playing football in high school, his mother made sure it was not the only thing he focused on; she had him enroll in music, theater, and dance classes as well.
His football prowess was there for also to see as he played for the Abington Raiders of Abington Senior High School before transferring to Fork Union Military Academy. After staying an extra year at Fork Union where he recorded 1,372 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns, he had several colleges coming for his commitment. He committed to Ohio State University where he had a slow start featuring for the Ohio State Buckeyes. He picked up in his junior season and became a starter for the team. He rushed for 1,442 yards and recorded 12 touchdowns that season.
The next season in 1995 was even better as George set a school record as he rushed for 1,927 yards and 24 touchdowns, including catching 47 passes for 417 yards. His team finished the season with a 10-2 record and on a personal note with George taking home the Heisman Trophy and being named a consensus first-team All-American. On the academic level, Eddie George graduated with a degree in landscape architecture and obtained an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University,
Career
Eddie George was always going to be a first-round selection in the 1996 NFL Draft and observers were not disappointed. He was selected by the Houston Oilers as the 14th overall pick in the first round of the draft. He went straight to the business as a starting running back and never missed a single game for the Houston Oilers (now called the Tennessee Titans) in his rookie season. His performance earned him the NFL Rookie of the Year and the Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year gongs. In his second season with the Titans, George made it to the Pro Bowl (and did so for three more years consecutively). He also led them to their first-ever Super Bowl final – Super Bowl XXXIV, but they would lose to the St. Louis Rams in the 1999 season.
In 2000, Eddie George signed a six-year contract extension with the Titans worth $41.25 million plus a signing bonus of $10 million. It also included an option of a one-year extension which could be activated by the outfit. The deal upped his profile and made him one of the highest-paid running backs in the league. However, after eight seasons with the Tennessee Titans, Eddie George left the team in 2004 when he refused to take a pay cut. He joined Dallas Cowboys on a one-year contract and was backup running back to rookie Julius Jones, but he was never able to re-enact his form with the Titans and so he announced his retirement in 2006 at the age of 31.
After his football career, Eddie George delved into acting. His first shot came in 2016 when he appeared on the Broadway musical Chicago. He played the character of Billy Flynn, a criminal lawyer who is hired by a housewife (Roxie Hart) as her defense attorney as she stands trial for murder.
Is He Gay?
When the gay question pops ups regarding an athlete or celebrity, it is most often because they have no relationship with the opposite sex or have broken off several relationships with the opposite sex. Other reasons could be that they are LGBT advocates or supporters or someone of the same sex who they are known to hang out with comes out as gay. In all the above-mentioned scenarios, Eddie George cannot be fit into any.
He said in 2012 when he was asked how he felt about Wade Davis who had just come out as gay, being a former NFL and Tennessee Titans cornerback himself, George in his response said being gay is not his personal preference.
