Basketball star Evan Turner turned professional in 2010 on the heels of a blockbuster college career at Ohio State University which saw him named the Big Ten Player of the Year, National College Player of the Year in addition to earning consensus first-team All-American honors. The talented player was drafted 2nd overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2010 NBA draft and after nearly 4 years with the team, he had a short stint with the Indiana Pacers. The NBA star also had a 2-year spell with the Boston Celtics before joining the Portland Trail Blazers in July 2016.
Evan Turner Biography
Evan Marcel Turner was born on October 27, 1988, in Chicago, Illinois. His first year of life was, however, plagued with several illnesses including chicken pox, pneumonia, asthma, and he was also a victim of the 1989 Chicago measles epidemic. By age 3, he survived a car accident as a result of which he sustained a concussion and required stitches. He also underwent speech therapy to correct a speech disorder resulting from oversized baby teeth and overbite.
Turner overcame the challenges of his early childhood to become a standout athlete. The youngster had an incredible run as a basketball player during his high school stint at St. Joseph High School in Westchester Illinois which earned him the attention of college recruiters from as early as his sophomore season. He received offers from several prestigious basketball programs, however, he committed to Ohio State University just after his junior year.
College Career
Turner’s sophomore season can be considered the breakout season of his 3-year run out with the Ohio State Buckeyes men’s basketball team as he led the team in statistical averages of points, rebounds, assists, and steals. He equally led the Big Ten Conference in scoring for the 2008–09 season, a performance which earned him a first-team 2009 All-Big Ten selection.
He was also the Big Ten scoring champion in his historic junior season, helping the Buckeyes clinch the 2010 Big Ten Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament and receiving the MVP honors of the tournament. He was named the 2010 Big Ten Men’s Basketball Player of the Year, the Big Ten Conference Male Athlete of the Year and also won the College Player of the Year award and nearly all the major awards for the season.
NBA Career
In April 2010, Turner declared for the 2010 NBA Draft and in line with expectations, he was selected 2nd overall by the Philadelphia 76ers. The talented player maintained a steady improvement in his productivity throughout his nearly 4-year run with the team. He recorded a career-high 17.4 points per game in 54 total appearances for the team during the 2013-14 season which was his last season with the team. He was traded to the Indiana Pacers in February 2014 and there, he spent the remainder of the season.
The NBA star joined the Bolton Celtics as an unrestricted free agent in September 2014. During the 2014-15 season, his scoring average dipped to 9.5 points per game though he recorded 5.1 rebounds and a career-high 5.5 assists per game. He recorded a marginal improvement during the 2015-16 season despite a decline in playing time. He was eventually traded at the end of the season to the Portland Trail Blazers on July 6, 2016. Turner lost out on the starting small forward role in his first season with the Blazers but he remains a critical member of the team’s bench.

Evan Turner’s mother is Iris James and his father is James Turner. He grew up with 2 siblings, older brothers Darius and Richard. Apparently, his parents are no longer together, however, he maintains a close relationship with his father. Starting from age 10, Turner got to spend every of his summer vacation with his father who is a resident of Columbus, Ohio. Interestingly, his decision to have his college basketball career at Ohio State was strongly influenced by his affinity with his father.

Evan Turner is in a relationship with his longtime girlfriend Chelsea Coia. It remains unclear when exactly the two kicked things off, however, they are known to have been together for quite a while. Coia graduated in 2010 from Temple University where she majored in Communications and Marketing. She is currently a fitness trainer and yoga instructor having launched her own fitness company Lady Bella Fitness in March 2014.
