It is believed that when a couple joins forces to work on achieving their goals, they become almost unstoppable. Ethan Klein and his wife Hila Klein work together to create videos wherein they react to various things. Doing this, they have been able to build an impressive number of followers. For a YouTube channel that started as a hobby, H3H3productions has come a long way. The couple has pulled off great achievements, including owning the first major YouTube channel to feature DJ Khaled. They were also the first to interview Jake Paul, one of the most famous YouTubers around.
While they create videos criticizing popular internet trends, the policies of YouTube and controversial popular figures, they have also faced several backlashes, including lawsuits over some of the videos they have uploaded on YouTube.
Meet The Duo Behind H3H3Productions
Ethan Edward Klein and Hila (Hakmon) Klein are the brains behind H3H3Productions. Edward was born on the 25th of June 1985, he studied English Literature at the University of California, Santa Cruz and graduated in 2009. Hila, on the other hand, was born on the 12th of December 1987. She served as a soldier with the Israel Defense Forces for two years.
Hila attended the Shenkar College of Engineering and Design in Isreal but didn’t complete her studies. While Ethan was born in the United States, she didn’t become a naturalized U.S. citizen until September 2019. After being together for several years, they got married in 2012 and began to build their life together in Israel.
They moved to the United States in 2015 and have lived in Los Angeles and New York City. The couple owns two Yorkshire terriers (Shredder and Alfredo) and welcomed their first child (Theodore Yochanan Klein) on the 4th of June 2019. They are both Jewish and even observe Jewish holidays; nonetheless, they identify as agnostic atheists.
What Makes H3H3Productions So Popular?
They started their YouTube channel in 2011 and released their first reaction video in November 2013. Most of their early videos were projects for Hila during her college days.
The couple takes time to create unconventional reaction videos which consist of clips of sourced videos mixed with absurd sketches and commentaries. They gained popularity for criticizing some policies of YouTube, certain internet personalities, and trends. The channel experienced rapid growth in 2015.
Their most-watched video titled “VAPE NATION” features Ethan poking fun at the vaping culture as he is seen buying an electronic cigarette and smoking it publicly. The video has received 26 million views as of December 2019. Their channel has close to 7 million subscribers.
YouTube Earnings and Net Worth
Being a YouTuber might be described as an unconventional career but it is a very lucrative endeavor. As of December 2019, H3H3 has a total of 6.59 million subscribers and over 1.5 billion views on their channel. This translates to an ad revenue of about $4,000 per day and roughly $1.4 million per annum.
They also earn from their merchandized products which contribute to their net worth estimated at $3.8 million by various sources.
What to Know About The Lawsuit Against H3H3Productions
While the couple (especially Ethan) has faced vast criticism for some of the videos they have posted, including allegations of betraying friends, they were eventually dragged to a court by a fellow YouTuber who was displeased by their use of his video in a reaction video they made.
On the 24th of May 2016, H3H3Productions released a video to confirm that they were being sued by Matt Hosseinzadeh. The lawsuit was filed in April 2016 by MattHossZone. It was a civil action for copyright infringement; after H3H3Productions made a reaction video to Matt’s video titled “Bold Guy vs Parkour Girl”.
Matt claimed to have contacted them to ask for the removal of his content from theirs which they declined. According to Matt’s lawyer, H3H3Productions used more than 70% of his client’s video without contributing anything substantial to it.
After the Kleins made a video about the lawsuit, another YouTube personality called Philip DeFranco started a fundraiser to help them raise money for legal fees on GoFundMe; they raised over $170,000. Sometime in May 2016, the Kleins announced that the funds will go into an escrow account which they called the ‘Fair Use Protection Account’ (FUPA). The fund will be overseen by Morrison & Lee LLP to help others defend fair use.
On the 23rd of August 2017, Ethan shared on twitter that they won the lawsuit.
We won the lawsuit. Video coming soon. Huge victory for fair use on YouTube.

He later divulged that the judge (Katherine B. Forrest) ruled in their favor, asserting that what they did constituted fair use.
