Australian-born Gemma Ward is best known to the world for her exploits on the catwalk but many are not in the know that this supermodel equally has a blossoming acting career. Her acting credits include the highly-acclaimed Australian film The Black Balloon and the hit fantasy film Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
An early bloomer, Gemma Ward began her modelling career at age 14 in her native country. She made history at age 16 when she became the youngest model to grace the cover of American Vogue. She has since garnered a rich history with Vogue magazine across several countries and was named one of the top 30 models of the 2000s by Vogue Paris.

She was born in Perth, Western Australia, on the 3rd of November 1987. She began her high school education at Presbyterian Ladies’ College and later transferred to Shenton College. Growing up, she had a great passion for acting and her biggest ambition was to become a world-famous movie star but apparently, fate had alternative plans for the youngster.
In 2002, 14-year old Gemma Ward accompanied a few of her friends to audition for an Australian modeling competition Search for a Supermodel. Though unprepared, she was convinced to take part in the competition by a scout who spotted her in the audience. She did not eventually win the competition, however, the scout made a showreel of her and sent it over to New York City. Ward’s raw potentials were more than obvious even in that impromptu showreel and thus her illustrious modeling career was birthed.
In May 2003, Ward made her first appearance on the Australian Fashion Week and a little over a year later, she got featured on the cover of American Vogue as one of the nine “Models of the Moment” alongside . She equally graced the covers of Australian Vogue, British Vogue, Vogue Paris, and Vogue Japan in 2004. She easily became one of the most sought models in the world and she got to walk the runway for some of the biggest names in fashion. At the age of 17, she landed several juicy endorsement deals including becoming the face of Calvin Klein’s Obsession Night perfume billboards, a position initially held by runway goddess .
Also in 2005, Gemma Ward appeared on the covers of Vogue Italia, Vogue Greece as well as the highly-coveted inaugural cover of Vogue China. She also appeared on the inaugural cover of Vogue India in 2007 and by so doing, she became only the third model to grace the covers of 2 inaugural issues of Vogue. However, her illustrious career got stalled in 2008 when she embarked on a temporary retirement owing to the tragic death of her then-boyfriend .
Ward’s 6-year hiatus came to an end in September 2014 when she returned to walk the runway for Prada at the Milan Fashion Week. This was followed by several other prestigious runway appearances, magazine features, endorsement deals and every other element that makes the world of fashion tick. Apparently, this supermodel effortlessly made her way back onto the top echelons of the industry.

Gemma Ward is the second of her parents’ four children. Her father Gary Ward is an Australian native and a physician while her mother Claire is an English native and a nurse. She has 3 siblings, an older sister Sophia and younger twin brothers, Oscar and Henry. Interestingly, Ward is not the only member of her family to have graced the runway. Her sister, Sophia, was a model at some point but she eventually quit owing to the fact that she found the profession to be boring.
