Geronimo Allison went undrafted in the 2016 NFL Draft but caught the eyes of the Green Bay Packers who signed him in May 2016. He plays as a wide receiver in the team though he is yet to see much time on the field and is seemingly up against contention for a spot on the team’s receiver roster, he is expected to be a standout in his chosen profession.
Geronimo Allison’s Bio
The Packers wide receiver was named Geronimo John Allison following his birth on January 18, 1994, in Tampa Florida. He attended Spoto High School, Rearview, Florida where he proved to be athletically affiliated even though he played football for one season. He did not play football in his sophomore and junior year due to his lack of effort in the classroom which translated to academic ineligibility. However, in his senior year, he set the sail to his gridiron career. He finished the phase with 26 receptions for 547 yards and scored 4 touchdowns (TDs). Also, he lettered twice in baseball and once in track and field.
After his high school, he moved on to Iowa Western Community College where he not only proved to be an asset in the football team but also a bright student. He earned his associate degree in just three semesters. From Iowa, however, he would transfer to the University of Illinois in 2014 where his two-year stint in the gridiron would set him on the Packers radar. Allison led the team to the 2012 NJCAA national title with a perfect 11-0 record. In 2013, he also led them to an 11-1 record in the Graphic Edge Bowl. His 69 receptions for 872 yards and eight touchdowns led the Midwest Football Conference in all three categories.
He finished his Iowa career with 95 receptions for 1,300 receiving yards and 10 TDs including his career high 65 receptions and 882 yards in his senior year which earned him an honorable mention All-Big Ten by the coaches and media. Among the many awards he won, he was selected to the 2015 Biletnikoff Midseason Watch List as well as won the Illini’s Service Above Self Award.
Moving on to Illinois from Iowa Western, he played on the Illinois Fighting Illini football team for two seasons and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communications. With the Fighting Illini, Allison started 22 of 24 games, caught 106 passes for 1,480 yards and eight TDs in two seasons.
NFL Career
Geronimo Allison was signed by the Green Bay Packers on May 6, 2016, as an undrafted free agent after going undrafted in the 2016 NFL Draft. He made his pro debut against the Atlanta Falcons after his promotion from the team’s practice squad to the active squad, eventually playing in 10 games and two starts as a rookie. He recorded his first career reception, a four-yard touchdown from in the second quarter of the game at Atlanta in Week 8.
In 2016, he ended the season with 12 receptions for 202 yards and 2 TDs with an additional 65 yards on five catches in three postseason games. The 2017 season started on a rather odd pedestal but one he was able to salvage on the long run. He served a one-game suspension in July 2017 for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy. For the rest of the season, he saw limited time in the field, most of which didn’t prove to be very effective and produced little. He finished the season with no touchdown though he caught 23 passes for 253 yards in 15 games. That notwithstanding, he was re-signed by the Packers on March 14, 2018.
Allison enters the 2018 season as the third-longest tenured receiver behind Devante Adams and Rendall Cobbs on the roster following veteran receiver ’s offseason departure. He possesses skills that could make him a useful option in the Packers games but would need to implement those to remain a viable option for offense.
Geronimo Allison’s Family
He is the son of Melissa Glover and has an older brother, Deonte. Nicknamed G-Mo. His catchy first name was given to him by his dear mother who wanted his son to have a unique name and stand out in a community where drugs and gang violence ruled the day.
Geronimo Allison grew up in a crime infested area of Tampa, Florida and was exposed to things like guns, drugs, violence, in a way most kids his age could only imagine. Nevertheless, sports provided an escape for the young boy and has carved a way to place him on the right path in his life after he was helped by a teacher in high school, Anne Caparaso, wife of Spoto High football coach Dale Caparaso. Miss Anne as he calls her, helped his plummetting GPA have a chance at life again by taking him through private lessons and online classes.
Besides sports, he would like to help others have a chance at life and success just the way Miss Anne did for him by either being a coach or a therapist.
Height, Weight, Body Measurements
The Packers wide receiver may be lacking in top-level athleticism which may not matter much considering that he is in his third year into pro football and has more room for improvements but he covers up for the deficit with his frame and long arms which is able to make a great catch that less favoured defenders could only envision.
At his full length, Allison could provide a large catch radius for his quarterback and has been doing so with Rodgers since he joined the team. His long arms also work to avoid jams at the line of scrimmage and when combined with good footwork and head fakes, he can get open reasonably well.
Nevertheless, his lack of short burst quickness and low speed tend to limit his overall ability even with his advantageous height. His career catch rate which is just 57% – though not very bad for a receiver with poor athleticism, could be increased and his drops which seem to be on easy catch opportunities could be salvaged by coaching.
His body stats include:
Height: 6’3” (1.91 m)
Weight: 202 lb (92 kg)
Arm Length: 32 7⁄8 in (0.84 m)
Hand Size: 9 1⁄2 in (0.24 m)
