Jake Marisnick may not be a household name for his exploits as a professional baseball player, however, no one can take away from him the fact that he was a part of the 40-man Houston Astros team that won the 2017 World Series. Read on to find out more about the outfielder who was selected in the third round of the 2009 MLB Draft by the Miami Marlins.
Early Life and Career
Jake Marisnick was born Jacob Shawn Marisnick on the 30th of March, 1991 in Riverside, California. While growing up, Marisnick revealed he was a big football and baseball fan. He played both sports from a young age until his junior high school year at Riverside Polytechnic High School where he decided to focus solely on one.
Marisnick was considered to be a highly rated talent going into his senior year. it was thought that he would be a first-round pick in the upcoming draft, however, following a poor showing in his senior year where he recorded his lowest batting average in high school, he decided to attend college by committing to the University of Oregon. But as things would pan out, Marisnick did not have to attend Oregon as he was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the third round of the 2009 MLB Draft.
Jake Marisnick went ahead to play for a number of minor league teams for a four year period before he began to gain plaudits again. The player was named the 58th best prospect in baseball by MLB.com going into the 2012 season. In November that year, the Blue Jays traded him and a number of other players to the Miami Marlins. It was here that Marisnick got his big break after he had starred for the Jacksonville Suns, a class Double-A affiliate of his parent team. His performances with the side earned him a promotion to the Marlins as he went ahead to make his major league baseball debut for the side on the 23rd of July, 2013.
Marisnick enjoyed a good start to life as a major league player. It took him just three days before he was able to record his first hit which came off the pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Jeff Locke. A few days after that, on the 31st of July, 2013, Marisnick hit his first career home run in a game against the New York Mets. He remained with the side until he was optioned to Class AAA Pacific Coast League side, the New Orleans Zephyrs in March 2014 before he was later traded to the Houston Astros a few months later.
In the 2014 season as a part of the Astros, Jake Marisnick played 51 games during which he compiled a batting average of .272 with 3 home runs, 19 runs batted in, and 6 stolen bases. He enjoyed an even better season 2015 season where he recorded a .236 batting average and an OPS of .665 over 133 games and 339 at-bats. Marisnick was unable to carry on his form into the 2016 season so he optioned to the Fresno Grizzlies of the Pacific Coast League, a Triple-A affiliate of the Astros.
In the 2017 season, Marisnick returned to the Astros and played in 106 games where he recorded a .243 batting average, 16 home runs, and 35 runs batted in. Marisnick was unfortunately not a part of the team in the 2017 postseason because he was nursing an injury. He was, however, included in the 40-man roster team which ended up winning the 2017 World Series.
