Joe Gomez is an inspiration to every child growing up in a low or middle-income home in London who is looking to make it big in life, although in his case, it was football he chose. His story is not just one that narrates a journey of rags to riches, but one that teaches patience and determination.
The England international player, who plays his club football for Liverpool FC, has navigated life’s trenches to be today described as the most complete, ball-playing defender that has come out of England in the past few years. He is known for his versatility in playing anywhere across the defense as well as his power and strength which allows him to dominate opponents.
Joe Gomez’ Bio
Joe Gomez was born Joseph Dave Gomez on the 23rd of May 1997 in Catford, a district of south-east London. From a very young age, Gomez dreamed of making it big as a footballer. He reportedly had pictures of big-time Premier League stars such as Rio Ferdinand on his wall as he hoped to one day live his dream.
Gomez started his journey to the top flight in the Sunday Leagues where he was scouted by nearby south east London club Charlton Athletic. According to Gomez, Charlton invited him for a six-week trial after which he was rejected by the club. Despite being heartbroken, the young boy went back to the Sunday League and continued to put in the performances that earned him a trial in the first place. A few months later, Charlton sent him another invitation and this time accepted him into its academy program.
As a 10-year-old, Gomez looked to be a head and shoulders above his peers. Within three years of being a part of the academy, he made his debut for the club’s under-18 team, which was a testament to his growth and ability. Those abilities did not go under the radar as bigger clubs began pursuing his services but Gomez remained with The Addicks and went on to sign his first professional contract with the side when he came of age in 2014. He had already made his first-team debut a few months before that as he went on to make a total of 24 appearances for Charlton in his first senior campaign.
Having somewhat completed his development, Joe Gomez’s next step was to join a bigger club that matched his personal ambitions. In the 2015 summer transfer window, the versatile defender joined Liverpool for a fee of around £3.5 million. He went on to make his first-team debut for the side on the 9th of August, 2015 in a match against Stoke City where he assisted the only goal of the match. Everything was going according to plan for the player that year until he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury while on international duty with the England under-21 team.
Joe Gomez spent a full year on the sidelines before he was able to return back to training to pick up his career from where he left off. By January 2017, he made his first start since the horrific 2015 injury in an FA Cup fixture against Plymouth Argyle. He made a few substitute appearances in the coming months before cementing the right position as his own, largely due to the injury suffered by the previous incumbent. The player has since that time become a full England international and is one of the first names on the Liverpool team sheet.
Family
Joe Gomez has three sisters and one brother. He credits his whole family, specifically his Gambian father Gus, and English mother Linda, for playing a very significant role in making him not just the player, but the person that he is today.
Gomez attributes his level-headedness to his parents who he says helped guide him in making the decisions that have culminated in him playing at the highest level today. He revealed that as a teenager, he did not get carried away by the interests of huge Premier League clubs as well as their big money offers. It was instilled in him that he needed to go through his development stage and gain valuable first-team action as a young lad before jumping at any opportunity which had to be carefully thought through.
