Joe Malcolm Harris first came into this world in Chelan, Washington on September 6, 1991. He came from an athletic family; his father Joe Harris Sr. worked as a high school basketball coach. He served as a coach for Bridgeport High School basketball team for six years, as well as, Chelan High School for twenty-four years; while his mother Alice Harris was a three-sport athlete. She played softball, volleyball, and basketball during high school. She is currently working at Coldwell Banker Lake Chelan Properties. Joe has three amazing sisters, Kaiti, Mackenzie, and Jaicee; all his three sisters are also active in sports.
While he was growing up, Harris attended Chelan High School where he began his basketball career. His father gave him a head start in the game because he was Chelan head coach at the time. As a junior, he helped the Mountain Goats to win the Class 1A state tournament while averaging 2.7 steals, 4.3 assists, 8.5 rebounds, and 24.7 points per game. At the end of the tournament, Harris won Class 1A Player of the Year Award by Associated Press and was selected to the First team All-Tournament.
During his senior year, Harris continued to take giant strides with the team; he led the Mountain Goats to the state tournament for the second time consecutively while maintaining a season record of 26 – 2. His wonderful performances were greatly appreciated by everyone. He received several awards and recognition including Washington Mr. Basketball Award as well as the Gatorade Washington Player of the Year award. He finished his senior high school season averaging 4.4 steals, 1.6 blocks, 8.0 rebounds, and 26.6 points per game. At the end of his high school career, Harris got a three-star college prospect rating from Scout.com, ESPN, Rivals.com, and 247Sports.
Harris enrolled at the University of Virginia where he played college basketball from 2010 to 2014. In his freshman year, he led the Cavaliers to the Maui Invitational Tournament, ACC-Big Ten Challenge, and 2011 ACC tournament. He finished the season with an average of 10.4 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. The following year, he was named to the All-State Second-team after scoring an average of 11.3 points and 3.9 rebounds per game.
As a junior, Joe Harris was selected to the All-ACC First-team while he averaged 4.0 rebounds and 16.3 points per game. In his senior year, he led the Cavalier to clinch their first ACC Tournament title; thus, becoming the ACC Tournament MVP. At the end of the season, he was named to the First-team All-Tournament and Third-team All-ACC. Following his impressive record, Harris joined the 2014 NBA draft prospects.

During the NBA draft of 2014, Joe Harris was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers; he was the 33rd player to be selected that year. After signing his rookie contract, he shared his playing time between the Cavaliers and the Canton Charge of the NBA G-League. He featured for the Cavaliers in the 2014 NBA Summer League, averaging 1.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 7.8 points. He got little or no playing time in the Cavaliers team following the acquisition of and .
In 2015, the Cavaliers made it to the NBA Finals but lost to Golden State Warriors. At the end of his rookie season, Harris average 2.1 points per game. He underwent a surgery in January 2016 to remove an extra bone from his right foot. Subsequently, he was traded with a 2017 second-round pick to the Orlando Magic in exchange for a 2020 second-round pick. He was waived by the Magic immediately after the trade.
In July 2016, Joe Harris signed with the Brooklyn Nets. He made his first appearance for the Nets in their game against Boston Celtics. Coming off the bench, Harris scored a total of 16 points in the game. At the end of the season, he averaged 2.8 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 8.2 points per game. The following season, he notched 3.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 10.8 points per game. In July 2018, Harris got a contract extension with the Nets.
