Joe Namath is one of those people who have had successes in almost everything they have tried. He is a legendary football player who has come to be known as one of the best passers in football history. A multiple Hall of Famer, Namath is a Super Bowl champion and MVP who has also had many other achievements in his NFL career that spanned from 1965 to 1977.
Referred to also as Broadway Joe, he is also an actor who has appeared in many films and TV shows such as C.C. and Company and The Brady Bunch. Namath has also appeared in some productions in which he played himself.
Joe Namath – Biography (Age)
The iconic football star was born Joseph William Namath on May 31, 1943, in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania which is also where he was brought up. Of Hungarian descent, he was raised in the Catholic faith by his parents Rose and János Andrew Namath both of whom he was close with until their divorce, after which he remained with his mother and his older siblings- three boys and an adopted sister.
Namath went to Beaver Falls High School where he was very good with sports. He played baseball as an outfielder and basketball as a guard. He would be remembered for his dunking skills in his high school days of playing basketball. The sport that he loved most was football which he played as a quarterback.
By the time he graduated from high school, there were already many Major League Baseball deals lining up to get his signature. But then, what he wanted more than anything was to play football and what his mother wanted was for him to go to college. Joe Namath chose to go to the University of Alabama where he showed the stuff he was made of in the footballing sense. He helped the Alabama Crimson Tide to clinch the national championship in 1964.
In 1965, he entered for the NFL and the AFL draft and was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Jets respectively. He decided to go with the Jets who were ready to pay him a record salary of US$427,000 at the time.
In that same year, he was named the AFL Rookie of the Year and in 1966 and 1967 he was the AFL passing yards leader. In 1968 and 1969, he was AFL’s Most Valuable Player. Shortly before the merger of the AFL and NFL, he helped the Jets to clinch the Super Bowl III which he also emerged as the MVP.
Joe Namath played for the Jets until he joined the Los Angeles Rams in 1977, the same year that he retired. In 1985, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and was honored by the Ride of Fame in 2012. The New York Jets also retired his No. 12 jersey.
Acting Career
Broadway Joe started his acting career after he hosted The Joe Namath Show for a brief period in 1969. The success he gained with the show made it easy for him to appear on stage and also get some acting roles in films and TV shows.
Among the films, he appeared in are Underdogs (2013) and The Wedding Ringer (2015). He appeared as himself in both. On TV, he got roles in Here’s Lucy, The Brady Bunch, The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, among many others.

Married: Wife and Daughter
Namath was a long time bachelor who remained unmarried into his 40s. However, when he was 41, he met a woman named Deborah Mays when he was taking a voice class. Deborah who would later have her first name changed to May before changing it again to Tatiana was an aspiring actress. She was 22 when they met.
Only a year after, the two got married and then they had their first child Jessica in 1986 followed by yet another daughter Olivia who was born in 1991.
Joe Namath who was known to have struggled with alcoholism for a long time battled the problem when he first got married but was able to pull out of it in fears that it could end his marriage. Unfortunately, the marriage still ended in 2000 and he remained with his daughters.
In 2007, his younger daughter who was 16 at the time, became pregnant and gave birth to a girl, Natalia.
