Although Rzeznik and vocalist/bassist Robby Takac are the only members of the band at the moment, the group’s original lineup included a drummer/percussionist George Tutuska, who left the band in 1995, one year after drummer/percussionist Mike Malinin joined Goo Goo Dolls. Presently, the band has guitarist/backing vocalist Brad Fernquist, keyboardist/guitarist/backing vocalist Jim McGorman, and drummer/guitarist/ saxophonist/keyboardist/backing vocalist Craig Macintyre as its touring members.
John also makes some neat earnings as a singer-songwriter, and producer. In the course of his sustained career, the music maestro worked with the following prestigious labels Warner Bros, Metal Blade, and Warner.
John Rzeznik’s Bio (Age)
The Goo Goo Dolls superstar’s full name is John Joseph Theodore Rzeznik. His parents, Joseph Rzeznik (a postal clerk and bar proprietor) and Edith Rzeznik welcomed him into the world on the 5th day of December 1965 in Buffalo, New York. John is the last child as well as the only son of his parents who are staunch Catholics. He is of English and German descent on his mother’s side and of Polish ancestry on his father’s side.
Rzeznik was barely 16 when he lost both of his musician parents (the couple played the flute and clarinet very well).
His dad had issues with alcohol which eventually led to his death at the age of 55 while his mother passed away as a result of a sudden heart attack just one year after the death of her husband, leaving behind John and his four older sisters (Phyllis, Kate, Gladys, and Fran) with help from their cousin John Guljas.
Owing to the singer-songwriter’s strict Catholic upbringing, John was enrolled at Corpus Christi Grammar School and later McKinley Vocational High School, where he met a friend who introduced him to playing the guitar, a hobby which he would eventually stick to in his entire life. Immediately Rzeznik finished from high school, he was offered an admission to further his education at Buffalo State College but he ended up abandoning his studies after his freshman year. Before he left, he came across a fellow musician called Robby Tacak, who became his friend and later the co-founder of the Goo Goo Dolls rock band.
Shortly after their band was formed, Rzeznik and Tacak had a difficult time making any headway within the music circle. They got signed to the French/American record brand Celluloid Records in 1985 but failed to gain immense success or popularity for nine years. However, the band’s career was pushed to the upward side after John wrote the soundtrack and song of the 1998 romantic fantasy movie, City of Angels.
Together with Goo Goo Dolls, the music elite has recorded eleven studio albums. To date, the band’s song Iris, which got featured in their other album titled Dizzy up the Girl, is considered their most outstanding hit. Their most recent studio album is titled Boxes. It was released on May 6, 2016. To his credit, Rzeznik is the writer of the song that played on Walt Disney’s 2002 American adventure movie Treasure Planet. He is said to have the performed the song as well. Outside of the show business, John and his band have been involved in several charity projects. While the frontman is an ambassador for VH1’s Save the Music Foundation, his partner Robby Takac prides himself as the founder of the Music is Art Foundation.
