Jon Cryer’s Biography
Jon Cryer is a man with an upside-down career. For many actors, the challenge is finding a successful big screen career after earning decent success on television, but for Cryer, the reverse was the case. He would later tick the success box for both mediums with the production of Two and a Half Men. It was the culmination of a journey that began in New York City on the 16th of April 1965 when he was born to Gretchen Cryer and Donald David Cryer.
Both his parents were professional creatives, with shared skills as singer and actors whereas his mother is also a playwright and songwriter. After twelve years of watching the life of his parents, Jon decided he wanted a life as an actor and he set out to achieve this dream by attending the Stagedoor Manor Performing Arts Training Center during the summer while he attended Bronx High School of Science. His passion drove him to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, a decision that was unwelcomed by his mother.
It all turned out very well for the actor who got his first acting credit on Torch Song Trilogy, a Broadway play in 1983, playing David. His first onscreen performance was for the romantic comedy No Small Affair in which he was cast in the lead role at the age of 19. He further solidified his skills with his excellent performance in Pretty in Pink which was released in 1986.
By the time the waves of Pretty in Pink died down, Jon Cryer had his name firmly written on the list of top comedic actors in the industry. This led to more roles in films like Hiding Out (1987), Dudes (1987), Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987), Hot Shots (1991) and many more. Following in the footsteps of his mother, Jon Cryer wrote a film he titled Went to Coney Island on a Mission from God… Be Back by Five. The film was well received by critics, signaling a successful outing for Jon as a writer.
However, while he was established to be a capable writer and a good actor with success on the big screen, he kept hitting failures on the small screen. He appeared in three shows as part of the lead which all got canceled in the first seasons before he was cast as Alan Harper in Two and a Half Men. Outside of his failures as a lead actor in a show, Jon Cryer was a guest actor in other shows like Dharma & Greg, Getting Personal, Family Guy, The Trouble with Normal, Hey Joel, The Practice, among a few others.
Since his role as Alan Harper, which he played for 262 episodes, appearing in every single episode of the show through its 12-season run, winning two Emmys Awards and getting nominated for seven other awards, he has starred in other shows like American Dad, Mom, NCIS, Will & Grace, and Supergirl where he currently appears as Lex Luthor in the hit CW show. Jon Cryer is also an author who has published his memoir titled, So That Happened: A Memoir.
