Joy Mangano’s Bio
Joy Magano was born in East Meadow, New York on February 1, 1956, to Italian-American parents Rudy Mangano and his wife Terri Mangano. She holds an American nationality and belongs to a mixed ethnic background. After she completed her basic education, Mangano enrolled at Pace University, New York where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1978.
Mangano started inventing different things from an early stage. As a teenager, she worked in an animal hospital in Huntington, New York and while she was there; she thought of a fluorescent flea collar that can keep animal pets safe. The following year, a product with similar design was launched by Hartz Mountain. After her graduation from Pace University, Joy did several jobs so she could sustain herself and her family. Her frustration with some of the household accessories led her to her first invention.
Product and Inventions
In her quest to create something new, Mangano made her first invention in 1990 and it was a Miracle Mop. The Miracle Mop is a self-wringing plastic mop with a continuous loop of cotton that can be wrung without getting the user to touch the water. She used her life savings as well as investments from her family and friends to develop the prototype. In 1991, she produced over a 100 units of the Miracle Mop and it was assembled in her father’s shop in Peconic.
Mangano sold over a thousand units to the American Cable Satellite Network QVC and local stores. The product recorded massive commercial success after Mangano went on air to sell it herself. It garnered over 18,000 units sales in half an hour. She then branded her products Arma products and later changed it to Ingenious Designs. Mangano continued to record massive sales and as at 2000; she was selling over $10 million worth of Miracle Mops annually.
Furthermore, Mangano went on to invent Huggable Hangers with thin profiles that conserve closet space. With an endorsement from , the Hangers became the best-selling HSN product in 2010 and it sold over 300 million units in the United States. She launched her next invention called the Forever Fragrant. They are a collection of odor neutralizers including sticks, wickless candles, scent stands, drawer liners, finials, shoe shapers etc. The product broke HSN sales record in 2010, selling over 180,000 units in a day. Her product has received the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval from The Good Housekeeping Institute.
Some of her other products include Comfort & Joy Textiles, Shades Readers, Performance Platforms, and Clothes It All Luggage System, among others. Mangano won the Ernst & Young’s Long Island Entrepreneur of the year in 1997. She was placed at No 77 in the list of 100 Most Creative People in Business by Fast Company in 2009. In addition, she was among the Fast Company’s 10 Most Creative Women in Business in 2010.
