Who is Keke Wyatt?
Ke’Tara Shavon “Keke” Wyatt popularly known as Keke Wyatt was born in Indianapolis on March 10, 1982. She is a television personality, singer, songwriter, and actress, who was raised in a Christian home with lots of gospel music but was exposed to secular and contemporary R&B songs. Her interest in music started at such a tender age and while she actually started singing at the early age of two, she had her first live performance at five.
She is of mixed race as her parents including her grandparents (maternal) marriages were interracial. Keke was raised alongside her brothers in an environment that was predominantly African-American. While in high school at Indianapolis, she was in their varsity wrestling team. In her teen years, she performed with some girl groups, however, her level of maturity exceeded that of her age group as a teenager.
Career
Her career as a musician started at the age of ten when she recorded the song What If, which was added to the R.H Duncan’s gospel album. She was such a great singer at such a young age and was loved by several top acts in the industry. In her mid-teens, she did some demo songs for certain gospel labels which earned her about $1,500 for each recording. Her disappointment in the music industry came after she would write lyrics for certain hit songs and got no credit for it.
Her platinum album Soul Sista which was released on November 13, 2001, sold over a million copies and was top five on the Billboard 200 for several weeks. During one of her interviews, she made a bold claim when she said that she was one of the pioneers of Destiny Child which was called The Dolls at the time before she was replaced by . Her song Nothing in this World in 2002 was nominated at the Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards for Best New R&B/Soul/Rap Artist.
She signed a contract with Cash Money Records/Universal Motown Records which was managed by Cassandra Ware after leaving MCA Records. She released her second album Emotional Rollercoaster in 2006 before quitting the label the same year due to conflict with management. Her third solo album Ghetto Rose was released in 2007 under TVT Record Labels, with Quadri El Amin as her manager.
Her other musical works include her single Who Knew (2010), which also served as the title of her album which was released the same year, another single Saturday Love, which was in the album Unbelievable (2011), and her single You and I. She released her first EP Ke’Ke in 2014 and a music video for the song I Deserve It, among others.
In addition to singing, Keke Wyatt is also a good actress. She played the lead role in Love Over Board (2009), R&B Divas (2012), etc. She was a spokesperson for National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, a nonprofit organization, where she shared her experience of domestic violence.
Family – Parents and Brothers
Singing in the family didn’t just start with Keke Wyatt; it is a trait that was passed from her parent having come from a musical family. Her both parents were gospel singers and regularly sang in church. And although much is not know of her family, we know that her parents are Ke’Tara Keke, a vocalist and organist and Lorna Wyatt who is also a vocalist. We also know that she has four brothers, two elder ones and two younger.
Personal Life – Husband, Children, Divorce
Keke Wyatt got married to her first husband Rahmat Morton at the age of eighteen; he was also her road manager at the time. Their marriage wasn’t that fantastic as she was abused by him and she admitted stabbing him in 2001 out of self defense. In 2009, she filed for divorce, and by the time the marriage ended, they had three children together and she was pregnant for the fourth one (which was stillborn). After the divorce, she relocated to Atlanta, Georgia from Kentucky with her children.
In 2010, she got married to Michael Jamar who was born Michael Ford. He was an ordained minister. Their marriage produced four children and so the family had eight children in total (three from Keke’s previous marriage and one from Michael’s). In April 2017, it was announced that they were expecting their ninth child, but the marriage didn’t stay for so long for the child to be born as they divorced in September 2017 when the pregnancy was eight months. In October 2018, a wedding with Zachariah Darring was announced.
