After four average years in Boston, Kelly Olynyk has proven he is not in over in the NBA as he played a significant role in his first season as a part of the Miami Heat. The former Gonzaga University athlete, who can play both as a center and a power forward, also plays for the Canada national team which he won Bronze with at the 2015 FIBA Americup. Biography
Kelly Tyler Olynyk was born on the 19th of April, 1991 in Toronto, Ontario to Parents of Ukrainian origin. At a very early age, Olynyk began playing basketball due to his parent’s involvement with the game. He attended South Kamloops Secondary School while he was also playing both Amateur Athletic Union and non-Amateur Athletic Union basketball in the United States and Canada.
Olynyk, who was playing primarily as a point guard in high school, guided his school to a third-place finish at the BC AAA High School Boys’ Basketball Championships in his 12th grade. For his efforts, he was named the Basketball BC outstanding high school player of the year, which garnered him attention from a number of reputable college programs, including Syracuse, Providence, and North Carolina State. He, however, chose to attend Gonzaga, partly because he wanted to stay close to home.
In his freshman year at Gonzaga, Kelly Olynyk was mostly used off the bench as he averaged 3.8 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. In his sophomore year, he still found himself still a bench player although he increased his averages to 5.8 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. Because of his status as a bench player, Olynyk decided to redshirt his junior year in order to improve his game time. He returned to the team in the 2012-13 season where he averaged 17.8 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. At the end of that year, Olynyk who had completed his requirements for an accounting degree decided to forgo his senior year and enter the draft.
NBA Career Stats
In the 2013 NBA Draft, Kelly Olynyk was selected 13th overall by the Dallas Mavericks but was however on draft night traded by the team to the Boston Celtics. He went on to average 8.7 points and 5.2 rebounds in 70 games in his rookie season to earn a place on the NBA All-Rookie second team. In his second year, Olynyk averaged 10.3 points and 4.7 rebounds in 64 games. In one of those games against the Philadelphia 76ers, he scored a career-high 30 points.
Olynyk never quite managed to impose himself in Boston so after his rookie scale contract ended in July 2017, he was cut by the team, giving room for him to join the Miami Heat. Here, the basketballer was able to find form again as he managed a new career-high point tally of 32 points in a game against his former team. He ended the 2017-18 season with 11.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game.
Kelly Olynyk’s Salary
The Center/Power forward earns an average salary of $12.5 million per year. This is thanks to the four-year $50 million contract he signed with the Miami Heat in July 2017. Prior to this deal, Olynyk, who spent his first four years in the NBA as a member of the Boston Celtics team was earning just about $2.3 million per year from his rookie contract that was a four-year $9.2 million deal.

Kelly Olynyk comes from a proud sporting family. His father, Ken, is a basketball coach while his mother Arlene served as a women’s basketball referee in the Canadian Interuniversity Sports organization. She has also worked as a scorekeeper for the Toronto Raptors. One of his two sisters also played the game in college.
In 1983, Ken Olynyk was appointed the Canadian junior men’s national team coach, a position he held until 1996. During that time, from 1989 to 2002, he also served as the head coach of the University of Toronto men’s basketball team. After Toronto, the senior Olynyk took up the position of athletic director at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia.
