When the time for high school came, the kid got enrolled at Dodge County High School in Eastman, Georgia where he fanned his zest for football by playing as a defensive end and tight end with the school team. In addition to his first love in sports, Floyd also participated in track and field events, notably throwing the shot put. At the 2011 Region 3AA Meet, he threw 14.96 meters which became a career best for him.
After high school, Leonard Floyd served time for one year at Hargrave Military Academy, at the academy, he took classes as a requirement of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). When it was time for college, nothing would stop him from devoting more time to America’s number one sports as he pledged to play for the University of Georgia in April 2011.
In his freshman year in 2013, Floyd started 8 games out of 13 and by the end of the season, he recorded a team-leading 6.5 sacks with 55 won tackles. By his sophomore year, he maintained his good form, winning 55 tackles, 6 sacks, a fumble recovery with which he ran 96 yards for a touchdown. The year 2015 turned out to be even better for him with 72 combined tackles, 3 well defended passes, 4.5 sack and a fumble recovery in all of the 13 games he played as a junior. Following his impressive form, the lad made known his intention to enter the 2016 NFL Draft.
The Chicago Bears picked him in the first round (ninth overall) in the 2016 NFL Draft. On May 27, 2016, Leonard Floyd signed his first professional contract: a four-year contract worth $15.78 million, a signing bonus of $9.67 million and $15.33 million guaranteed. On joining the team and as it is traditional, he earned his place as the starting left outside linebacker by competing against Lamin Barrow, Pernell McPhee, Sam Acho, Lamarr Houston, Christian Jones and Willie Young in the team’s camp training.
The kid got off to a good start in his debut match against the Houston Texans as a linebacker where he recorded 6 combined tackles with a half sack on of the Texans. In his next game, he sustained a calf injury which saw him off the gridiron in the Bears next two games. Nevertheless, playing football is what he was born to do as he made a comeback to the field when his team played the Green Bay Packers. In this match, Leonard Floyd made a bad record as forced the first fumble of his budding career, first defensive touchdown and fumble recovery as the Chicago Bears were humbled in a 26–10 loss.
In an attempt to tackle running back Rashad Jennings of the New York Giants, Floyd had a collision with his teammate Akiem Hicks as a result of which he suffered a head/neck injury and a concussion while Hicks had a compressed neck as the crown of Floyd’s helmet had a strong impact on his neck. Both players made a quick recovery after the incident. By the end of his eventful 2016 rookie season, the Georgian native had 7.0 sacks, 33 combined tackles, (23 solo), 7 sacks, a forced fumble and fumble recovery in addition to one touchdown and one safety in 12 games and 12 starts. With these, he was placed third among all rookies in his rookie season.
At the beginning of the 2017 season, Leonard Floyd fought for his place in the team throughout their training camp against fellow teammates; Willie Young, Pernell McPhee, and Lamarr Houston. He proved convincingly that he was the better player over the trio and thus, Head coach John Fox named him the starting right outside linebacker to start the season.
