Cohn was born on Long Island in the state of New York on 10 November 1959. She began to watch sports programs at a young age with her father who was an avid sports fan. However, her mother is considered to be directly responsible for having the most influence on everything she has turned out to become in life.
The sports anchor had her high school education at Newfield High School in Long Island. After this, she proceeded to the State University of New York located in Oswego, New York, graduating in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications.
Cohn has always been a sports enthusiast right from her time in high school up until now. While in high school, she was a natural at ice hockey, earning her a place in the school’s male ice hockey team. The talented sportscaster was the female ice hockey goalie during her university days at Oswego doing so well at the time. In 2006, she was honored with an induction into the Oswego State Athletics hall of fame.
Linda took up sportscasting as a career in 1981, starting off as a sports anchor for Walk-AM/FM in New York. She left Walk-AM/FM in 1984 and in a space of three years worked at four other radio stations in New York City. She made history in 1987 after ABC hired her becoming the first full-time female sports anchor on the National Radio Network. The talented sportscaster having gained enough experience as a radio sports anchor decided in 1988 to join Sports Channel America as a T.V sports reporter. After leaving Sports Channel America, she joined Washington KIRO-TV as a sports anchor.
In 1992, American based sports television channel ESPN signed Linda to work as an anchor and sportscaster. She has been at the channel from then up until now becoming the major face of their sports news program SportsCentre. She debuted on the sports show alongside Chris Myers on July 11, 1992. In 1994, she was almost let go from ESPN following a query about her lack of enthusiasm issued by the company.
Linda Cohn has spent over 26 years at ESPN, hosting over 5000 editions of SportsCentre. This feat was achieved on February 21, 2016, and set an all-time record for SportCentre anchors and sportscasters. Cohn also does commentary for WNBA broadcasts as well as hosts the popular Listen Closely to Linda Cohn podcast. She presently co-hosts SportsCentre with Neil Everett.
Cohn is equally an established author having authored her own memoir which she titled Cohen-Head: A No-Holds-Barred Account of Breaking Into the Boy’s Club. The book detailed her experiences so far in the world of sportscasting and her rise to fame. In 2017, Linda Cohn was finally inducted into the National Sports Media Association Hall of Fame.
Daughter, Ex-husband – Stew Kaufman
The Oswego Hall of Famer got married to her long-time sweetheart Stew Kaufman sometime in 1980. They met each other way back in the university and the rest became history. The couple, however, ended up in a divorce which was finalized in 2008 following some irreconcilable differences which invariably brought an end to the marriage of 28 years.
The union between Linda Cohn and Stew Kaufman was blessed with two lovely children – Dan and Sammy. Cohn’s daughter, Sammy Kaufman, happens to be her eldest child.
