First on our list of Ansel Elgort movies, Baby Driver is unique for a few reasons, many of them resting on the shoulders of Ansel’s character Baby. The character showed his excellent acting and perfectly reflected and integrated his real-life love for all things music.
In the movie, Baby is a music-loving young lad who is a beast behind the wheels of any car. Due to some bad decisions, he is forced to work for a crime lord known as Doc () as a getaway driver to pay off his debt. However, after the job goes wrong, Baby finds himself in a terrible situation that threatens his life, love, and freedom. The movie also featured names like , Jamie Foxx, and .
The movie was hailed by critics for everything from its fast-paced action sequences to its killer soundtrack. The $34 million budget movie was given a massive 93 percent approval rating by critics on Rotten Tomatoes and an 86 percent audience approval rating. It grossed a massive $226.9 million at the box office and garnered 45 awards and nominations.
Elgort for his part in the movie, won a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor and a few other nominations.
2. The Fault in Our Stars (2014)
It is usually a risky business whenever a movie studio decides to readapt a bestselling piece of fiction for the big screen. It frequently ends badly, but The Fault in Our Stars proved that it could perform well. Based on John Green’s 2012 novel of the same name, critics praised the movie for being real and relatable and for showing humor and sadness without going overboard on either front.
The movie tells the story of Gus (Ansel Elgort), a former bone cancer patient, and Hazel () who has thyroid cancer. After meeting each other for the first time in a cancer support group, they are drawn to each other by their shared trenchant wit, hatred of all things conventional and their similar life circumstances.
The movie was praised its ability to stay true to its original source material. The Fault in Our Stars was made on a budget of $12 million and grossed a staggering $307.2 million. It earned itself an 80 percent critics’ approval rating and an 85 percent audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The romantic drama received 27 nominations, winning 18 of them.
3. Jonathan (2018)
Next on our list is Jonathan, an ingenious story about two brothers Jonathan and John (both played by Ansel Elgort), both sharing the same body. Their doctor, Dr, Nariman () who raised them has found a way to get each of them to have 12-hour shifts in each day. For years, both are at peace with their circumstance and go on to have successful careers as an architect and a clerk in a law firm respectively. However, their delicate balance is shaken when both brothers fall in love with the same woman, Elena ().
This sci-fi flick was not as successful as the previous two Ansel Elgort movies on this list. However, it still did manage a rating slightly above average. On Rotten Tomatoes, 26 critics gave it an average approval rating of 65 percent while the audience marked it at an even lower 55 percent approval rating.
4. Paper Towns (2015)
After his powerful portrayal of Gus in The Fault in Our Stars, Elgort appeared in a more diminished role as a convenience store clerk known as Mason. This was the actor’s second appearance on a movie based on another of John Green novel, this time his 2008 novel Paper Towns.
The movie tells the story of a kind and withdrawn Quentin and his long-time adventurous and popular neighbor Margo. The story centers around Margo as she draws Quentin and his friends on an unexpected all-night adventure that involves her disappearing and Quentin and his friends trying to find her. A 20th Century Fox movie, Paper Towns premiered in theaters on July 24, 2015. It ended up grossing $85.5 million on a budget of $12 million. The rom-com mystery also bagged three Teen Choice Awards in the same year and received a 57 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
5. Carrie (2013)
Ansel Elgort’s debut movie is the next on our list. This supernatural horror movie tells the story of a shy and unassertive girl Carrie White () who is humiliated and filmed at her high school as she witnesses her first menstrual flow.
Soon after this incident, Carrie finds out that she has telekinetic powers. She then spends time harnessing it and goes on a rampage to deal ruthless revenge on all those who have hurt and humiliated her at school. The movie stars Ansel Elgort as the character Tommy who is killed by a prank gone wrong in the movie’s climax.
Carrie brought in $85 million on a $30 million budget. However, critics largely saw the movie as unnecessary, given that it was the third adaptation of Stephen King’s 1974 novel of the same name. It received a 50 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
6. Divergent (2014)
By far one of the most popular Ansel Elgort movies in the actor’s career. Based on Veronica Roth’s novel of the same name, Divergent is set in a dystopian/post-apocalyptic Chicago where humans are categorized based on the virtues they possess. Beatrice Prior (Shailene Woodley) is classified as Divergent, a character-type that means she does not fit into any faction. She soon uncovers a plot to destroy all Divergents and this leads her on a quest to discover what makes the Divergents so dangerous.
The main stars of this sci-fi action thriller include the likes of , Ansel Elgort, , , and among others. This was the first installment in the Divergent series and it went on to record box office revenue of $288.9 million off a production budget of $85 million. While cinema goers apparently loved the film, critics thought it “disappointingly predictable”. It received a poor approval rating of 42 percent.
7. Men, Women & Children (2014)
Another novel adaptation, Men, Women & Children has a clear ‘now vs then’ feel to it. It is basically a movie that highlights the evolution of norms and perceptions in society told in dramedy format.
The film narrates the story of a number of parents and their teenage children as they try to navigate how drastically the internet age has changed the way society views communication, relationships, love life, self-image and so on. Ansley, still an upcoming actor at this point played the major role of Tim Mooney. He was also joined on the set by A-listers such as , , Emma Thompson, and Dennis Haysbert.
While its production budget is not known, the film was only able to bring in a disappointing $2.2 million at the box office. The movie only earned an abysmal 33 percent approval rating from 136 critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
8. Insurgent (2015)
The second movie in the Divergent trilogy continues from where the first left off. Beatrice Prior continues her quest to uncover the secret of the Divergents, only this time, together with her allies, she is being chased by Jeanine (Kate Winslet), the leader of the power-hungry Erudite faction who plans to wipe out all Divergents.
The first installment was received with generally mixed reviews but Insurgent, according to critics was an even worse showing than its predecessor. It received a poor approval rating of 28 percent from 200 critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Insurgent, however, like its predecessor was a box office success. It grossed $297.3 million on a budget of $110 million.
9. Allegiant (2016)
It seems this Ansel Elgort movie trilogy, regardless of their commercial success belong to the lowest rung of Elgort’s acting career. This the final installment in the Divergent series comes last in the trilogy’s pecking order, performing much worse than its predecessor, Insurgent.
This installment sees Beatrice’s quest take her beyond the walls of Chicago for the first time, consequently plunging her into a last-gasp showdown that sees her make unforgivable choices.
Allegiant was the least commercially successful in the trilogy, depicting a growing sense of boredom with the franchise according to critics. It earned a gross return of $179.2 million, barely making it past its production budget of about $142 million. A total of 187 critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie a poor approval rating of 11 percent.
10. Billionaire Boys Club (2018)
This movie tells the story of a group of young wealthy men in the 1980s whose get-rich-quick scheme comes back to bite them in the back when they are themselves scammed by an experienced conman played by Kevin Spacey. Ansel plays the lead role of Joe Hunt.
Billionaire Boys Club was Spacey’s and Elgort’s second work together. However, this was an absolute far cry from their first work – Baby Driver – which tops this list. Perhaps, part of the movie’s downfall can be attributed to Kevin Spacey being embroiled in a battery of sexual assault cases at the time the film was shot and released.
This crime drama was made on a budget of $15 million and performed catastrophically at the box office, only recouping $2.5 million as gross revenue. In keeping with its abysmal trend, the movie only earned a pitiable approval rating of 7 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
