Marv Albert, also known as the “Voice of Basketball” is an American sportscaster. He has been honored for his work as a member of the basketball hall of fame in 2015. He is also popularly called the Voice of New York Knicks. He has announced other sports apart from basketball such as American football, horse racing, ice hockey, boxing, and tennis. He has also called a number of NBA Finals games, Super Bowls, and Stanley Cup Finals matches. Albert currently works for TNT and CBS. He is a legend in his field and has received several awards and honors throughout his lifetime.
Marv Albert’s Bio
Marv Albert was born on June 12, 1941, as Marvin Philip Aufrichtig to a Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Abraham Lincoln High School before going on to attend the Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communication from 1960 to 1963 and later the New York University in 1965. Albert started his career as a ball boy for New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. He was then an assistant for Marty Glickman. He did his first calling for the Knicks on January 27, 1963, over WCBS Radio when Glickman was on a visit to Europe.
Since this breakthrough, he has been the voice of the Knicks for 35 years starting from 1967 on radio and television. He lost his job in 2004 when he openly criticized the Knicks’ poor performance on air. He had also anchored MSG’s former nightly sports news report. Albert also appeared on Letterman’s Late Show hosted by David Letterman, his segment was called the Albert Achievement Awards.
Albert was arrested for sexual assault and was charged with forcible sodomy in 1997. He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault and battery charged and received a 12-month suspended sentence. He lost his job with NBC due to the scandal, however, Albert later resumed work for NBC after two years and was the Network leading play-by-play man for two seasons and the finals (2000-2001, 2001-2002). Albert called the Monday Night Football and was the main play by play voice for Westwood One radio network’s NFL coverage from 2002 to 2009.
He joined CBS Sports on June 6; 2011 and was usually paired with Rich Gammon to call The NFL on CBS. He resigned from The NFL on CBS on May 29, 2014, to concentrate on basketball duties for TNT and CBS
