Mike McGlinchey is an American football offensive tackle taken from Notre Dame by the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL) with the ninth overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Here’s what you need to know about the first round pick.
Mike McGlinchey Bio
The 49ers big Mike was born Michael Sean McGlinchey on January 12, 1994, in Warrington, Pennsylvania, a few minutes drive outside of Philadelphia. He attended William Penn Charter School at Philadelphia in Pennsylvania. With his interest in sports and just the right stature, he joined the football and basketball teams. Mike started as a tight end, had a short stint at quarterback, before moving to offensive lineman, a position he enjoys playing. Mike was named a team captain in his senior year and was selected to first-team offensive lineman by a couple of outlets.
Coming from a standout career, he continued with his explosive game at the University of Notre Dame, known for her tradition of success. McGlinchey, as earlier stated, is a proven hybrid and has a history of playing football in a freaked-out fashion, exploring different positions from quarterback to almost every other offensive and defensive position save for cornerback and safety. He redshirted in his freshman season but played all 13 games (1 start) in his second season. Given his versatility, after redshirting his freshman year in 2013, he became a regular starter at right tackle going into the 2015 season including starting the team’s Music City Bowl win over LSU at right tackle. He eventually moved to left tackle before the 2016 season.
He returned to Notre Dame for his 5th year of eligibility to improve his stock for the draft. During his final collegiate season, he saw action mostly on special teams and also helped the Fighting Irish finish seventh nationally in rushing yards (averaged 269.3 yards per game) during 2017 season. In addition to that, McGlinchey was named a team captain and also earned a consensus First-Team All-America honors. He graduated with a degree in film, television, and theatre in May 2017.
Mike McGlinchey was selected by the San Francisco 49ers with the ninth overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Following his selection, the 49ers signed him to a four-year contract worth a fully guaranteed $18.34 million. The offensive lineman is set to trail the blaze and go off to becoming a starter through his NFL career having proven his athleticism with the Fighting Irish. He will begin his career opposite veteran tackle, Joe Staley and could become his eventual successor at left tackle. Staley has been a stalwart along the offensive line for over one decade.
His Family
Big Mike comes from a large, insanely football family. Most members of his family played or are playing college football with some making a profession out of the game. Among them are his first cousin, Atlanta Falcons’ quarterback, and an uncle, John Loughery, who played quarterback at Boston College from 1979 to 1982. He is the oldest of six children (five boys, one girl) born to Mike McGlinchey Sr. and Janet McGlinchey including a brother, Jimmy McGlinchey who is autistic.
Height, Weight, and Body Measurements
Athletes are known for their massive body physique and impressively built body but McGlinchey’s mammoth size is one that beats the imagination going by the fact that his folks aren’t that big. His father stands at about 5’11” while his mother is 5′ 8″ with the tallest among his relatives at approximately 6’4″. That stated, only a genetic mutation could explain his giant-like stature.
Mike McGlinchey has a height of 6 feet 8 inches (2.01 m) that carries his 315 pounds (132 kg). He has an ideal build and with the combination of his height and weight, he has the power and athleticism to line up on either side of the offensive line and face top-tier talent. Also, his toughness, quick feet, excellent pass blocking skills, and athletic IQ make him a great pro in the making. Nevertheless, like almost every player coming into the league, McGlinchey needs to add strength and bend better in the run game to step up his game.
His other body statistics include his hand size which measures 10 inches (0.25 m) and arm length of 34 inches (0.86 m).
