Early Life and Education
On the 1st of August 1986, Mike Wallace was welcomed into the world by his parents; Burnell and Sonjia Wallace in New Orleans, Louisiana where he was also raised. Like every other young child in the area who had to choose between music and sports as a way out of poverty, Wallace took up playing football from a young age and excelled at it.
He attended O. Perry Walker High School where he was part of the track & field and football teams, notably playing alongside future NFL cornerback, Keenan Lewis. As a junior, Wallace showed his versatility and ability to play both offense and defense, although he mostly featured on the defensive position, managing four receptions that year. In his senior year, however, Wallace was used more on the offensive position and he showed why colleges should be scrabbling to have him in their programs as he caught 60 passes for 1,039 yards with 19 touchdowns. He set the school records for total points and kick return touchdowns and further earned first team All-State honors as well as league and district MVP honors.
After his high school football career, Mike Wallace committed to attend Oregon State in order to play with his friend, Lewis. The player, however, later backtracked on his commitment and joined the University of Mississippi who had brought in his high school coach to its set up.
Mike Wallace’s start to life in college football was as expected as he played in 10 games as a true freshman. The following year in 2006, he started all 12 games for his school and recorded two touchdown receptions. In 2007, Wallace again featured in all 12 games and recorded 38 receptions for 716 receiving yards with 6 touchdowns which earned him a spot on the third-team All-Southeastern Conference. In his senior year, Wallace showed more improvement as he caught 39 passes for 784 yards with 7 touchdowns.
After graduating from college and attending the 2009 NFL Combine where he performed highly in the 40-yard dash, the Pittsburgh Steelers selected him in the third round with the 84th overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft. He went ahead to put pen to paper on a three-year contract worth $1.74 million which included a $555,000 signing bonus.
His rookie season was one to remember as Wallace got awarded the Joe Greene Great Performance Award which is given to the best rookie on the Steelers roster. The wide receiver had caught a game-winning pass with seconds left on the clock while falling out of bounds to secure his team a victory over fierce rivals, the Green Bay Packers. He further led the whole league in average yards per reception.
It was business as usual in his second season as Wallace, who was made his team’s No. 2 wide receiver, established himself as an elite wide receiver with 60 receptions for 1,257 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns. He went on to make his first Super Bowl appearance that year which his team lost to the Packers. Mike Wallace spent two more years with the Steelers before joining the Miami Dolphins as a free agent. He spent two years in South Beach before he was traded to the Minnesota Vikings in 2015. After one season, the Vikings released the wide receiver, paving the way for him to join the Baltimore Ravens on March 2016. At the expiration of his two-year contract with the Ravens, Wallace joined the Philadelphia Eagles.
