Before turning professional in 2016, American football safety Miles Killebrew had a brilliant college career with the Southern Utah Thunderbirds football program of Southern Utah University. He joined the Detroit Lions of the National Football League following the 2016 NFL Draft.

Age, Early Life, and Rise to Fame

Born on May 10, 1993, Miles Killebrew is widely reported to have been born in the city of Henderson, Nevada. However, the NFL star was actually born at a community hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. His family only moved to Nevada when he was a kid and he was raised there.

He had his high school education at Foothill High School in the Clark County School District, graduating in 2011. As a two-sport athlete, the talented youngster was lettered in football and basketball.

Miles Killebrew mainly played in the running back and wide receiver positions for his high school football team. He recorded 86 carries for 392 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns and also had 3 receiving touchdowns. Playing as a defensive back, he registered 77 tackles with 3 sacks and 6 interceptions. Killebrew was an all-state and all-city honoree in high school and was also named the defensive MVP. He also got the first-team all-league as well as academic all-state honors twice.

College Career

A safety/linebacker hybrid, Miles Killebrew was a starter in all of his 4 seasons of college football. After redshirting his freshman season, he joined the team as a redshirt freshman in 2012. He started in all 11 appearances for the team in that season, totaling 69 tackles (42 solos), the team’s third-best and a team-leading 5 pass defenses. For his sophomore season, he finished with 54 tackles (32 solos), four and a half tackles for loss, 2 pass defenses, and 2 fumble recoveries. He recorded the second longest fumble return in the school’s history at the time when he returned a fumble 89 yards for a touchdown.

In his junior season, Miles Killebrew featured in all 12 games for the Southern Utah Thunderbirds during which he totaled 101 tackles (62 solos), the second-best on the team. He equally had 2 tackles for loss, 4 forced fumbles, and three interceptions. Killebrew was voted captain of the football team in his senior year and he indeed lived up to expectation as he led the team with 132 tackles (74 solos). For that season, he was named to All-Big Sky First Team for defense and also named to the All-Big Sky Second Team for his prowess on special teams.

During his 4-year college career, Miles Killebrew tallied 356 tackles (210 solos), six and a half tackles for loss, 4 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries, 3 interceptions, 7 passes defended and 2 defensive touchdowns. The talented player earned All-Big Sky selections at the end of each season; All-Big Sky Honorable Mention (2012, 2013), All-Big Sky Second Team (2014) and All-Big Sky First Team (2015). By the end of his college career, he was projected as a third or fourth round draft.

Miles graduated from Southern Utah University in April 2016 with a degree in Engineering. He was selected in the 4th round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions as the 111th overall pick, becoming the highest draft selection out of Southern Utah University. The talented youngster received the news of his drafting via a phone call while on his way to his college graduation. In May 2016, he signed a 4-year contract with the Lions valued at $2.34 million.

Miles Killebrew was born to Lisa and David Killebrew, both natives of the US state of Indiana. It turns out that the NFL star is not the only member of the family with amazing sports talents. A former athlete, his father made it to the Olympic trials for cycling in his heyday and has also served as the coach of a youth team. Miles was raised alongside one sibling, a younger sister named Kailani who also ran track at Baker University in Kansas.
