Ray Stevenson’s Biography
He was born and named George Raymond Stevenson on May 25, 1964, in Lisburn, County Antrim, Northern Ireland to parents whose names and information are yet to be disclosed. However, it is known that Ray’s father was a captain of the Royal Air Force and his mother happens to be an Irish woman.
He is the second child of three brothers and spent a little of his childhood in Northern Ireland and Lemington, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, but later relocated with his family to Cramlington, Northumberland where he grew up.
Ray Stevenson graduated and got a degree in creative arts from Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, a prestigious drama school in Bristol which provides training in acting for film, television, and theatre.
He appeared on multiple TV series in the early 90s such as Catherine Cookson (1993), A Dwelling Place as Matthew Whitwell (1994), Band of Gold as Steve Dickson (1995), The Tide of Life as Larry Birch (1996), Peak Practice as Joe Higson (1997) and Drover’s Gold as Armstrong (1997). In 1998, he made his film debut in the movie The Theory of Flight where he portrayed a male escort who was employed to help one of the film characters lose her virginity. He also played as DI Tony Baynham in the British television police procedural drama show City Central which was written and created by Tony Jordan, later that same year. Stevenson also starred as Mr. Hardy in the movie GMT: Greenwich Mean Time in 1999, and also featured in an episode of Love 21st Century as the character, Alex.
Ray Stevenson continued to appear in various TV series such as The Bill (2000), Holby City (2000), At Home with the Braithwaites (2001), Dalziel and Pascoe (2001), Red Cap (2003), Murphy’s Law (2003) and Walking the Dead as Dr Tim Faulkner (2004).
Apart from movies and TV series Stevenson was also part of some theatre performances, he appeared in York Mystery Plays where he played the part of Jesus Christ (2000). The next year, in 2001, he played the role of Roger in the theatre performance Mouth to Mouth and the later played a Cardinal in the play The Duchess of Malfi alongside actresses Janet McTeer created by John Webster at the Royal National Theatre in 2003.
In 2004, he portrayed the selfless army commander Dagonet in King Arthur, who gave his life up for his soldiers. He was later offered the role of one of the main characters in the very popular English-American TV show Rome as Titus Pullo in 2005 and later appeared in LifeLine as Peter Brasco and The Super Hero Squad Show as Frank Castle.
Ray Stevenson went on to play the role of DC in the Scotland horror movie, Outpost and also was in the movie Punisher: War Zone as Frank Castle in 2008.
In 2009, he starred in the movie Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant as Murlough, The Book of Eli as Redridge (2010), The Others Guys as Roger Wesley (2010), Kill the Irishman as Danny Greene (2011), The Three Musketeers as Porthos (2011) and in Thor as Volstagg in 2011. He reprised his role as Volstagg in Thor: The Dark World in 2013 and Thor: Ragnarok in 2017. He also appeared in G.I. Joe Retaliation as Firefly (2013), Divergent as Marcus Eaton 2014, reprising his role as Marcus Eaton in Insurgent in 2015 and Allegiant in 2016. In 2018, he starred in the movies Accident Man as Big Ray and Final Score as Arkady.
