Rudy Gay is one of the successful names in basketball, especially in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The 6 feet 8 inches tall athlete is best known as a player for the San Antonio Spurs who mans the power and small forward positions.
The young player’s interest in basketball started at the tender age of 12 when he became active in competitive recreational basketball in Baltimore Maryland which happens to be his hometown. Under the supervision of coach Anthony Lewis, the aspiring professional basketball player joined the Cecil-Kirk AAU program at the age of 14. Before making it to the NBA, he played basketball in high school and college where he gained several recognitions and accolades prior to his NBA draft of 2006 by the Houston Rockets.

The African-American basketball player was born on 17th August 1986 in Brooklyn New York City. He is an American national born to father Rudy Gay Sr. and mother Rea Gay, although he prefers to go by the name Rudy Gay, his full name at birth is Rudy Carlton Gay Jr. The baller comes from a family of seven with three sisters – Yozimin, Brett, and Candice Gay, he also has a brother known as Eric Gay.
The basketballer’s high school education can be traced to Eastern Technical High School which is located in Essex, Maryland, However, he did not complete his education there, he had to transfer to Severn, Maryland, where he joined Archbishop Spalding and stayed till graduation. During his years in high school, he recorded impressive stats and consequently, he got several honors and accolades for his hard work and dedication. Rudy’s honors at this early stage include; Parade first-team All-American, Washington Post All-American, and McDonald’s All-American.
Talking about his college education, Rudy Gay had two controversial choices – either to attend the University of Maryland or go with the University of Connecticut. On his own part, Rudy expressed his preference for Maryland over Connecticut, his reason being that he grew up rooting for the Maryland basketball team. In spite of his professed sentiments, he ended up choosing the University of Connecticut because an AAU coach and a high school coach were heavily involved. Although it appeared to be inappropriate, they did not discover any NCCA recruitment violations, so, they just had to let it go.
Rudy Gay made the 2008 NBA Draft where he was drafted eighth overall by the Houston Rockets with his rights traded to the Memphis Grizzlies a few days later. Since his NBA draft, he has played in four major NBA teams recording impressive career statistics.
Beyond basketball, the professional player has a humanitarian side to his nature, he has been heavily involved in charity work and fundraising activities which have earned him some recognition from institutions like St Jude Children’s Research Hospital which named him Ambassador for the Hoops for his donation of $20,000 to the program. Potential donors stepped on his generous donations to pledge an amount of money to be donated for every point scored by Rudy and other NBA players who were participating in the program. In recognition of his humanitarian service to the Memphis community, particularizing it to his continuing support of St Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Rudy Gay got the NBA Cares Community Assist Award for the month of March in April 2010. His support also attracted another donation of $5,000 from the National Basketball Association to the hospital.
