Born Patrick Ryan Kerrigan in Muncie, Indiana in the United States on August 16, 1988; he was born to American parents – Anita Kerrigan and Brendan Kerrigan. Ryan holds an American nationality and belongs to the white ethnic background. He grew up along with his brother, Kyle Kerrigan and sister, Kaitlin Kerrigan. His father played football at the Ball State University while his brother was part of the DePauw University’s swimming team. Ryan started playing football from a very young age and when he was in high school, he played the position of the defensive end for his school team.

He attended Muncie Central High School situated in Muncie, Indiana. Upon graduation, Ryan enrolled at Purdue University where he played for the Purdue Boilermakers football team for four seasons ending in 2010. In his freshman year, he made 18 tackles and a sack in 12 games. The following year, he had seven sacks, an interception, and 56 tackles. During his junior year, he hauled 12 sacks and 66 tackles. In the same year, he was named to the All-Big 10 first team and was honored with Pit Bull Award for his tenacity and resilience.

In 2010, he won the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year award as well as Big Ten Lineman of the Year. He also received the Bill Willis Trophy and was named unanimous first-team All-American. At the end of his college career, Kerrigan joined the list of prospects for the 2011 NFL draft.

NFL Career and Stats

During the 2011 NFL draft, Kerrigan was selected by the Washington Redskins as the 16th overall in the first round of the draft. Joining the team, he penned down a four-year contract of $8.72 million and the deal also includes a signing bonus of $4.84 million. Ryan became an outside linebacker and he made his professional debut in their win over the New York Giants at the beginning of the season. He made five combined tackles, returned a touchdown and a pass deflection in the game. He was in action for 16 games for the Redskins in 2011 and he totaled 65 combined tackles, one touchdown, one interception and four fumbles at the end of the season.

The following year, Kerrigan became a starter playing alongside Mike Shanahan. Playing his second regular season for the Redskins, he featured in 16 games; thus, leading his team to the playoff. He finished the season with a total of one touchdown, eight pass deflections, and 54 combined tackles. Ryan was named to the 2013 Pro Bowl as a replacement for Francisco 49ers star Aldon Smith who went on to feature in Super Bowl XLVII. During the 2013 season, he notched 3 touchdowns, 66 combined tackles, and three pass deflections.

In the 2014 season, Ryan Kerrigan went through an arthroscopic surgery to fix a torn ligament on his knee. He also got a one-year contract extension for $7.03 million from the Redskins. That year, he had a career-high of 13.5 sacks, five fumbles, and 64 combined tackles; making him the sixth all-time franchise sack leader with a total of 38 sacks. He also ranked 78th on the list of NFL Top 100 Players of 2015. In 2015, Kerrigan re-signed a five-year contract worth $57.50 million with the Redskins. He finished the season with a total of two forced fumbles, 42 combined tackles, three pass deflections and 9.5 sacks.

In 2016, Kerrigan had an impressive season reaching his 50th sack in Week 5. He also played all 16 games for his team, amassing two pass deflections, 10.5 sacks, and 33 combined tackles. In addition, he was named to the 2017 Pro Bowl for his top-notch performance. He was graded 82.2 by Pro Football Focus. In the 2017 season, Kerrigan retained the starting shirt for the Redskins. He appeared in 16 games for his team, having a touchdown, 13 sacks, and 46 combined tackles. He got his third Pro Bowl nomination and was graded 84.2 by the Pro Football Focus. His consistency and unique style of play have kept him a notch in the Washington Redskins lineup.

In addition to his blossoming football career, Kerrigan is also successful in his love life. He married his long-term sweetheart named Jessica Mazura. Jessica was born and raised in California she is a sociology and education graduate from the University of California. She has worked in the operations department of the notable sports brand Nike and as a head coach for the Slammer football club, a youth female soccer team. Her love for animals led her to take up a position as a veterinary nurse at the Banfield Pet Hospital in Reston, Virginia. She has two English bulldogs named Franklin and George.

The couple tied the knot in March 2018 in a lavish wedding held in Huntington Beach, California. The wedding was attended by Ryan’s teammates, their friends, and family members. Jessica has been a great part of Ryan’s life and she is one of his biggest fans. Although they don’t have kids yet, they might have plans of having them in the future.
