Scott Dixon Biography
Born on July 22, 1980, to New Zealand parents Ron and Glenys Dixon, in Brisbane, Australia’s most populated city, Scott Dixon started his car racing career when he was seven years, starting with kart racing. He caught the attention of the people of New Zealand at the age of 13 when he obtained a competition license to race a saloon car and with that he won the New Zealand Formula Vee championship. Not only did he stun viewers with his excellent racing skills, Dixon was always more determined to win every series of the racing championship he competed in.
Career Detail
After his major win at the at the New Zealand Formula Vee championship in 1994, he successfully completed the Formula Ford Class 2 series with 13 wins from 14 races, and the full New Zealand Formula Ford championship in 1995 and 1996, respectively. By 1998 Dixon had won the Formula Holden series that ushered him to race in the Australian V8 Supercar series which he, however, did not accept, instead, he moved to the US so he could test in the Indy Lights series.
Between 2002 and 2003, Scott Dixon made it as the youngest winner of a major open-wheel event (Nazareth in 2002). This was after he broke the track record on his eighth lap and was signed to Johansson Motorsports Indy Lights team. Dixon won his first IndyCar Series race in the 2003 season opener and went further to make a name for himself by leading with 343 consecutive laps. Although the year ended on a tragic note for him as his teammate and friend, Tony Renna, died at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway while practicing for his first session with the team. Things turned out well for Dixon in 2008 when he was able to win from the pole in the opening round of the 2008 IndyCar Series season at Homestead. He also won the Indianapolis 500 and was honored as the 2008 New Zealand Sportsman of the Year. Not just that, he was recognized as the longest-tenured driver in team history.
On and on he went achieving success in his racing career. At the beginning of the 14th season of the IndyCar Series, Dixon finished sixteenth and fifteenth in the first two races, at St. Pete and Long Beach. He then got eight podiums, winning at Kansas, Milwaukee, Richmond, Mid-Ohio, and Motegi, as well as a second at Chicago and thirds at Texas, Watkins Glen, and Edmonton. Dixon won seven races and finished third in the championship three times between the 2010 and 2012 seasons. He also won the 2013 Pocono IndyCar 400 fueled by Sunoco in Long Pond, Pennsylvania and the following year, he won two races and finished third in the championship and was thus voted New Zealand’s Sportsman of the Year at the Halberg Awards.
Between 2015 and 2017, he won his first Indycar race of the season at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, and also won his second Indianapolis 500 pole, made victories at Phoenix and Watkins Glen and then made his best finish at the 2017 Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.
