Any long-time fan of the San Francisco 49ers would definitely know a thing or two about Steve Young. For the most part of his NFL career, Young was with the 49ers, playing as a quarterback. With the NFL side, he won three Super Bowl titles – XXIII, XXIV, and XXIX and was named the Super Bowl MVP for the XXIX game which was against the San Diego Chargers. Born on October 11, 1961, in Salt Lake City, Utah, Jon Steven Young followed in the footsteps of his father to become a football player. His father LeGrande “Grit” Young earned substantial playing time in the 1950s at the Birmingham Young University, a college that was named after his own great-great-great grandfather Brigham Young who was the second president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

His athletic side became full-fledged during his high school years at Greenwich, Greenwich, Connecticut. Young began playing with the varsity’s Cardinals football team as a quarterback. By his junior year, he was already a starter and in his senior year, he was named to the CIAC All-State team. However, football was not Steve Young’s only interest. A complete jock, he also played on the school’s baseball and basketball team.

When it was time to pick a college, Young had two options; the University of North Carolina and the Brigham Young University. He chose the latter and quickly improved to replace the team’s regular starting quarterback. With Young as the QB, BYU set a couple of NCAA records. He was a recipient of the coveted Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award which honors the best NCAA quarterback. He came second in the polls for the Heisman Trophy.

With an incredible college stat basting of 592 pass completions for 7,733 yards and 56 touchdowns, a pro career was certain for Steve Young. He began his career with the newly established United States Football League (USFL) signing a 10-year $40 million deal with the league’s Los Angeles Express.

Young didn’t get the chance to display much of his skills with the USFL which folded up a couple of years later in 1986. He would then join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who selected him in the 1984 NFL Supplemental Draft of USFL and CFL Players. Youg was the first player to be selected in the draft. A couple of years later, Steve Youg was traded to the San Francisco 49ers to serve as a backup to their franchise player Joe Montana.

Young did well to shine even as a backup and by 1991 following Montanna’s injury, Young became the team’s starting QB. He became NFL’s MVP for the first time in 1992 and again in 1994 when he was also named the Super Bow’s MVP, becoming the 6th player in NFL history to achieve the feat. Young led the 49ers to two Super Bowl victories. Steve Young left a string of records behind during his playing years and his legacy will surely live on for generations to come.

In late 1999, the concussion that plagued Young almost throughout his career forced him into retirement. Steve Young holds a Juris Doctor degree from BYU’s J. Reuben Clark Law School. He is actively involved in business and serves as the MD of Huntsman Gay Global Capital. He also dedicates his spare time to charitable causes.

Family, Wife (Barbara Graham)

Steve Young is married to a certain Barbara Graham. They met in 1999 with the help of a mutual friend Tyde Tanner and got married on March 14th, 2000. Graham joined Young to become a Mormon while they were dating. They have four kids including two son and two daughters.

In his autobiography QB: My Life Behind the Spiral, Young narrates the struggles of his romantic life and how he broke off two engagements before marrying Graham.

Graham hails from Scottsdale, Arizona and is an alumnus of Arizona State. She is a former model and now works in public relations.

Player salaries were not followed back in the days as they are today, thus much details about Young’s football earnings are subject to mere speculations. While many peg it at $40 million, others argue that it is as high as $200 million.

After penning a contract with the Express, Young agreed to receive his payments in form of annuity which was to be paid in 40 years. Rumors had it that though the USFL and the Express were no more, Young would keep getting paid until 2027. However, LA Times in 1985 revealed that on the said annuity, Young got paid $1.4 million.
