After high school, he enrolled at Northeast Louisiana University on a baseball scholarship, however, he suffered a knee injury that meant he was not going to be able to pursue a professional career. This prompted him to drop out of school to focus on a musical career as he had learned how to play the guitar and would occasionally sing for money.
