Tom Cullen Bio
Tom Cullen was born on the 17th of July, 1985, in Aberystwyth, Wales, to an Irish mother and an English father. Despite the origins of his parents, Cullen was fully assimilated into the Welsh culture while growing up, partly because he was raised by his father while his two siblings were raised by his mother after his parents, who were both stage writers, divorced.
He spent his formative years in Llandrindod Wells, a place he describes as Wales’ mountain farmlands, before moving to the capital city, Cardiff at around the age of 12. He attended Llanishen High School and then spent a year at the Central School of Speech and Drama. During this time, Cullen was heavily involved in music but he later decided to focus on acting as he enrolled at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Right from the get-go, the young man demonstrated a natural talent for his craft as he made his professional acting debut while still in school in the BAFTA Cymru award-winning Best Film, Daddy’s Girl. He also appeared in the BAFTA Cymru award-winning short film, Watch Me, as he was also performing numerous stage roles before graduating in 2009 with a First Class Honours degree in Acting.
After leaving school, Tom Cullen who had already built a reputation for himself did not have to wait long to find work as he had the option of picking what he wanted to appear in. He had also followed in the footsteps of his parents to write, as he had already written and produced a short film while in school. This led him to set up the Welsh company Undeb Theatre with fellow Welsh actor Alexander Vlahos in 2009.
While directing, writing, or producing plays for Undeb, Cullen appeared in short films like 20 Questions (2009) and Balance (2010) before getting his mainstream breakthrough in the romantic drama film Weekend (2011) which earned him a number of awards. Other shows and films in which Cullen appeared in at this time include Black Mirror (2011), World Without End (2012), Downton Abbey (2013-2014), The Last Days on Mars (2013), and Desert Dancer (2014).
In recent times, Tom Cullen has appeared alongside some of Hollywood high profile acts such as Idris Elba, Gemma Arterton and in movies like A Hundred Streets (2016), Mine (2016), and The Other Half (2016), before going on to make his film writing and directing debut in Pink Wall which is set to be released in 2019.
Is He Gay?
It seems like an actor in Hollywood or elsewhere, who dares to take up a gay role will forever have his sexuality questioned, despite the obvious facts that prove otherwise, as Tom Cullen has found out the hard way. In the British romantic drama film, Weekend (2011), Cullen played the role of a charismatic gay romantic named Russell. His performance in the movie earned him the British Independent Film Award for Best Newcomer but however further brought about speculation on whether he might be gay.
There are no indications to prove that Cullen is gay as there are concrete ones that point to the fact that he is not. Since 2011, the Welsh actor has been in a relationship with Canadian actress Tatiana Maslany, who is best known for her Primetime Emmy Award-winning role in the sci-fi television series Orphan Black (2013–2017). The two are said to have met each other while filming the miniseries World Without End in Budapest. They have since that time been dating and are also reportedly sharing a home in Los Angeles, California.
