Troy Williams is an American professional basketball player who plays as a forward for the New Orleans Pelicans of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Prior to his going pro in 2016, he was a star on the collegiate front where he played three seasons for the Indiana Hoosiers. He has played for three teams over the two seasons of his career including the Houston Rockets, New York Knicks, and Memphis Grizzlies.

Troy Williams was born on December 30, 1994, as the only child of a single mother in Hampton, Virginia. As a boy, he was introduced to athletics; first was baseball and then football but none of them got his attention the way basketball did in his fourth grade. Though he didn’t approach the game with all the commitment it required initially, he was soon to be taken in by dunk after he played for the middle school team. That was when his interest soared and he was set to go any length for the game that got his heart. From that point, he started watching the NBA and college teams more, all the while nursing the dream to one day play like them.

Soon, he was playing in high school. He played his first three seasons at Phoebus High School in Hampton, Virginia. He was highly productive on the court that recruiting analysts took notice and in no time, he was ranked as one of the best players in his class. As such, schools like North Carolina, Kentucky, Villanova, Louisville started calling. But just like every promotion comes with its attendant responsibilities, Troy needed to stay up academically to retain the interest of analysts and schools in him and possibly earn a spot in a college team.

Consequently, he put in all he had to get his ranks as well as his grades remaining at the top. Nevertheless, his rankings slipped and programs backed off. He was subsequently transferred to a prestigious school in rural southern Virginia, Oak Hill Academy for his senior season. The idea was to have him surrounded by other elite players who would not only sharpen him on the court but also challenge him in the classroom. And it paid off.

His results were eventually littered with As and Bs which got the attention of the recruiting pack back on him. As a senior, he averaged 16.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.0 blocks during the regular season, compiling nine double-doubles. Moreover, he was named the Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year and led Oak Hill to a regular season record of 34–5 and an appearance in the National High School Invitational. He finished his high school career as a top 30 recruit in the class of 2013 and was recruited by the Indiana University.

He started all the 32 games his freshman season, averaging 7.3 points and 4.4 rebounds while shooting 50.9%. As a sophomore, he stepped up his game and became pivotal in Indiana’s game after he was suspended for the first four games of the season due to a drug fail test. He played in all the games (28 starts) and was an honorable mention All-Big Ten. He averaged 7.4 rebounds per game to lead the team, while his 13.0 points per game ranked third on the team. After an explosive season, he considered entering the 2015 NBA draft and his name even appeared in mock drafts. However, he decided it was not time yet and returned to the Hoosiers for his junior year.

As a junior, Troy Williams played in 35 games and made 34 starts, averaging 13.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. he also earned third-team All-Big Ten honors. After the season, he was finally ready to go pro and on May 25, 2016, he forwent his final year of eligibility to declare for the NBA draft.

NBA Career

Troy went undrafted in the draft but was signed by the Memphis Grizzlies on August 8, 2016. He made his professional debut on October 29, 2016. During his time with the Grizzlies, he received multiple assignments to the Iowa Energy of NBA Development league who acquired him on February 3, 2017, after he was waived by the Grizzlies. On February 18, he won the 2017 NBA D-League Slam Dunk Contest.

Shortly after, he signed with the Houston Rockets and was assigned to their D League affiliate, Rio Grande Valley Vipers. He was recalled in April and went on to score 18 of his career-high 21 points in the first half of the Rockets’ 123–116 win over the Phoenix Suns. On February 14, 2018, the Rockets waived him.

The New York Knicks signed him to a 10-day contract one week after he was waived and subsequently to a multi-year contract on March 13. Following a broken jaw injury on April 2, he missed the rest of the season after averaging 7.5 points, 3.5 rebounds in 17 games. Williams was officially waived by the Knicks on July 16, 2018, after summer league play. In turn, he signed a two-year, non-guaranteed deal with the New Orleans Pelicans on July 25.

Troy Williams Family, Mom

The Pelicans’ small forward was born into a hoops family. His father, Yhosef Ware was largely absent in his life and as such, he was raised by his mother, Patty Williams and other members of her family including his guardian (uncle) Marcellus Spencer “Boo” Williams Jr., Terrance (aunt) and grandmother.

His mother seemed to be the only member of the family who didn’t play the game although she is now so much a fan of it because of her son. Uncle Boo was a star at Phoebus High school, played collegiate basketball for Saint Joseph’s University. He runs the Boo Williams AAU program and Boo Williams Nike Invitational in Hampton, Virginia. Terance played basketball at Penn State and also coached at Auburn while another uncle, who works at Pentagon played football at West Point.
