Like every other child in a low-income household, Woodley looked to sports as a way out of poverty.
He attended McCluer High School where he was a part of the amateur wrestling and American football teams. After graduating in 2000 with a 48-0 record and being named a National High School Coaches Association Senior All-American as well as the Missouri State High School Activities Association All-State, Woodley enrolled at the University of Missouri. By 2009, Woodley was able to turn pro, making his professional fighting debut against Steve Schnider and winning it in the first round via submission. His second professional fight went according to the script as he also bagged it in the first round via submission.
Tyron Woodley’s big break came in his third professional fight at the ‘Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields’ event on June 6, 2009, where after again winning in the first round by submission, he was signed by the Strikeforce MMA organization to a six-fight deal. His next fight was in the Ultimate Fighting Championship at UFC 156 where he faced Jay Hieron and defeated him in just six seconds.
On the 30th of July, 2016, Woodley won the UFC Welterweight Championship against incumbent champion Robbie Lawler. He has since that time been able to retain the belt against three challengers. Having seemingly conquered his division, the talented fighter has begun to pursue an acting career, most famously appearing in Straight Outta Compton (2015) and Escape Plan 2: Hades (2017).
