What Is Alex Trebek’s Age?
Born George Alexander Trebek in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada on the 22nd of July 1940, one can easily guess Alex Trebek’s age. His parents (Lucille Lagace and George Edward Trebek) raised him in a bilingual home (French and English). His first job was at age thirteen as a bellhop in the hotel where his father worked as a chef.
For his education, he attended Sudbury High School and proceeded to the University of Ottawa where he studied philosophy and graduated in the year 1961.
Alex wanted a career in broadcasting and began to horn his skills while he was in university. He was an active member of the English Debating Society and he began to work at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in 1961 before graduating from the university. His job which was at night afforded him the opportunity to soak in knowledge about his dream job. He revealed that he did everything and at a time replaced every announcer in every possible job. He went ahead to cover several events for the CBC’s television and radio divisions and also read the national news.
Alex began his hosting job in 1963 with the program Music Hop. He then moved to host Reach for the top (a high school quiz program) in 1966. Between 1967 to 1970, he was a host for CBC. He hosted several classical music programs, a weekly skating program, and Strategy.
Already established as a media personality, Alex relocated to the United States in 1973 and began to work with the NBS, hosting the new game show called The Wizard of Odds. He hosted High Rollers between 1974 to 1976 and 1978 to 1980. He also began to host the CBS game show called Double Dare and also Pillsbury Bake-Off from 1994 to 1998. Alex Trebek then began to host the syndicated series called The $128,000 Question. Of all his career as a host, Jeopardy is his longest hosted show and it gave him his major success.
For his outstanding career as a host, Alex has won 6 Emmy Awards for ‘Outstanding Game Show’ in 1989, 1990, 2003, 2006, 2008 and in 2019. He has a star both on Hollywood Walk of Fame and Canada’s Walk of Fame. He also holds a Guinness World Record as at 2014 for having ‘the most gameshow episodes hosted by the same presenter for the same program’. As at then, he had hosted 6,829 Jeopardy episodes.
Alex has been married twice. His first marriage was to Elaine Callei from 1974 to 1981. He then married Jean Currivan in 1990 with whom he has two children (Matthew and Emily).
How Long Has He Been The Host of Jeopardy?
Alex first hosted two pilot edition for the revival of Jeopardy as a replacement for the original host, Art Fleming, after he refused to return to host the show because of creative differences. Alex officially began to host Jeopardy in 1984.
The show uses a unique format whereby clues are offered to contestants in the form of answers while they provide the questions. Alex’s version became successful and went ahead to become one of the most popular shows on television. The show also opened up Alex’s career, skyrocketing him to being a pop culture icon.
Alex has been hosting the show for thirty-five years now and has a contract due to expire in 2020.
With Alex Trebek’s age rolling into the eighties, he has slowed down lately as a result of different health issues. He announced in March 2019 that he was diagnosed with stage IV of Pancreatic cancer. He was very optimistic and stated that he was going to fight and beat it. He gave an update in June that he was making progress and was near remission. He finished chemotherapy in time to even begin the August taping of the show.
But around mid-September, he announced that he was going through another round of chemotherapy, that he was probably ‘overoptimistic’ thinking the worst was behind him. However, he continues to express his belief about seeing his contract through.
In an interview in 2018, he admitted that at the end of his 2020 contract, chances of him returning to host the show is 50/50. Laura Coates (an author, legal professor and radio host) and Alex Faust (a Los Angeles Kings announcer) have been suggested as his possible replacement.
