Early Life

Anna Boden was born in Newton, Massachusetts, in 1976. There is not much information with respect to her family. She has a sister named Elisa, a famous gastroenterologist based in Seattle. Their father, Leslie Boden, is an economist and a professor of environmental health at the Boston University School of Public Health. Other than the fact that she grew up in a Jewish home, information about Anna Boden’s early life as a child is scarcely available. Boden attended Newton North High School and bagged her first degree from Columbia University.

Relationship With Ryan Fleck – Are They Married?

Ryan K. Fleck was born in Berkeley, California. He studied at Castro Valley High School, before attending New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where he studied film. Fleck also attend Diablo Valley College where he studied Science and Math. Initially, Boden was said to have been attending the same college with him, however, other sources indicate that Boden was at Columbia University at that time. Anna and Fleck met on the set of a student film where they worked together. Meanwhile, Fleck had just completed his thesis short film Struggle, when both of them decided to collaborate – which have seen them write, direct and produce several movie projects together.

It is not quite easy to remain professional at all times and being partners of the opposite sex, there is a possibility of an emotional attachment. Anna and Fleck’s work relationship did metamorphose into a romantic one, however, contrary to popular belief, they never made it to the altar. Anna was pregnant at the time of Mississippi Grind’s release and they both have a son together named Felix who was born in March 2015.

Career And Work With Ryan Fleck

Anna Boden has years of experience in cinematography. She is famous for her collaboration with the popular filmmaker Ryan K. Fleck. 80% of movies directed and produced by Anna was co-written and produced by Fleck. Together, they produced and directed short documentaries Have You Seen This Man? and Young Rebels before subsequently writing and directing the short film Gowanus, Brooklyn (2004), which was a sample feature targeted towards attracting potential financiers to their undeveloped script, Half Nelson.

The short film won a prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival and Boden and Fleck were later invited to the Sundance Writer’s Lab to receive professional feedback on the Half Nelson screenplay. However, the film did not receive sufficient financing for a couple of years and this resulted in its delay.

Years of hard work finally paid off in 2006 when Half Nelson was released. It dominated so many cinemas for months. The film was well-received by critics and got nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor ( played the lead role in the film).

Anna and Fleck have since co-written and co-directed the 2008 film Sugar which premiered at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. The screenplay was written after researching about many Dominican immigrants who arrive in America to play in minor league towns. The Duo also collaborated on a screen adaptation of Ned Vizzini’s young adult novel It’s Kind of a Funny Story, which was released on October 8, 2010.

 

More so, In 2012, the duo began working on a gambling movie called Mississippi Grind. The idea for the film came when they visited riverboat casinos in Iowa. In April 2017, Boden and Fleck were contracted to direct the Marvel Studios film Captain Marvel. They were considered previously to direct another Marvel film, Guardians of the Galaxy. The movie was released in March 2019, and became a box office success, grossing more than $1 billion worldwide.

In May 2019, it was revealed that they would direct the first two episodes of the television show Mrs. America while they produce the entire series. The show will feature as Phyllis Schlafly.
