Bio
Smith was born in Bremerton, Washington on the 7th day of May 1984 as Alexander Douglas Smith. He grew up in La Mesa, California and attended Helix Charter High School, where his father was an executive director.
He is currently an NFL’s quarterback playing with the Washington Redskins. He actually began playing back in his junior and senior days at Helix Charter High School, where he played as a starter for the Helix Scotties, and eventually led his team to a record-breaking 25–1, including two San Diego CIF section championships.
He was named the first-team all-conference and all-county squads in the San Diego CIF system at the time, earned the conference offensive player of the year twice, and also won the team MVP for the school twice.
While at Helix, Smith broke a school record of throwing six touchdowns in one game and also recorded the second-highest completion percentage in the history of San Diego at the time.
For Alex Smith, football wasn’t just one of those things one did as an extra-curricular activity in High School, for him, it was something much more than that, thus, he decided to take it professionally after High School and has successfully made a living out of it.
After his High school exploits on the pitch, he went ahead to play for the Utah Utes as their number 11 man. Smith led the team to victories in the 2003 Liberty Bowl as well as in the 2005 Fiesta Bow. In 2004, he, alongside Reggie Bush emerged finalists of the 2004 Heisman.
Professional Career
In 2005, the San Francisco 49ers made him the No. 1 overall selection of the 2005 draft. Smith signed a six-year contract worth $49.5 million. The contract included $24 million in guaranteed money.
His career with the 49er wasn’t very smooth, but one filled with ups and down. He lost his starting job, dealt with injuries, beaten out for the role in training camp in 2008 by journeyman J.T. O’Sullivan, began a new season behind Shaun Hill in 2009 before starting the final 10 games of that season and lots more.
In 2011, after being under 3 head coaches, 7 offensive coordinators, and 17 starting wide receivers in the space of 7 seasons with the 49ers, Smith was finally able to make his first playoff appearance under Harbaugh, who took over as San Francisco’s coach in the same year.
By the end of the 2011 season, he had helped lead the 49ers to a 13–3 record in the regular season which include five come-from-behind victories and a first-round bye in the playoffs. Smith also became the first quarterback in the history of NFL to lead two go-ahead touchdowns in the final 3 minutes of a game.
He won the Ed Block Courage Award (an award annually awarded to the player that exemplifies a commitment to sportsmanship and courage). Smith also earned the USA Today All-Joe Team – an award usually given to the best players not to make the Pro Bowl.
In 2013, the 49ers agreed to trade Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs for the Chiefs’ second-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft and a conditional pick in the 2014 NFL Draft and he remained with the chief until January 2018 when they traded him to the Washington Redskins in exchange for a 3rd round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, alongside cornerback Kendall Fuller.
