Like many gifted singers, Anna started singing as a child. While in high school, she sang in a traveling musical troupe and also studied piano.
Anna Netrebko actually started her singing career in the 1990s after a two-year training at a musical college after which she joined the St. Petersburg State Conservatory (then the Leningrad Conservatory).
There, she worked as a janitor at the Mariinsky Theatre before she was discovered by an opera company director, Valery Gergiev. Her operatic stage debut was at the Mariinsky Theatre where she played Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro.
This was after she won the first prize in Russia’s prestigious Mikhail Glinka vocal competition in 1993. Although she initially wanted to be an actress, her voice teachers helped her see her beauty as a singer.
