Bruce Greenwood is no doubt one of the most prominent faces in the Canadian movie industry, as well as Hollywood. Having started his acting career in theatre, Greenwood has managed to reach the summit of his career through his brilliant performances. He is best recognized for his sensational depiction of the character of the former US President John F. Kennedy in the historical political thriller movie Thirteen Days, which earned him a Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actor.
With a career that has spanned over four decades, the Hollywood icon has earned both fame and wealth that comes along with it. He has starred in a plethora of blockbuster movies and TV shows. Asides being an actor, Greenwood is also a producer and voice actor.
Bruce Greenwood’s Biography
The award-winning actor was born Stuart Bruce Greenwood in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, Canada on 12th August 1956. He is the son of geophysicist, Hugh John Greenwood, who was a Princeton University Professor and Mary Sylvia, who worked as a nurse in the extended care unit. He has two younger siblings; sisters named Lynn and Kelly, who work as an activist and a nurse, respectively.
As a result of his father’s job, Bruce Greenwood never resided in an area for more than four years during his childhood. After his birth in Quebec, his family moved to Princeton, New Jersey. They later relocated to Maryland and then Washington D.C. However, at the age of eleven, his family moved back to Canada, where he mostly had his childhood experiences.
His family’s constant movement caused Greenwood to attend many schools. He completed his middle school in Bethesda, Maryland, and his high school in Zurich, Switzerland. Albeit, he partly attended Magee Secondary School in Vancouver. Upon completion of his basic education, he enrolled at the University of British Columbia, where he studied Philosophy and Economics. From there, he proceeded to the prestigious American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City to hone his acting skills.
While he was there, the actor had his first acting role in a theatrical production of à la Tarzan. Thereafter, he did some odd jobs, including diamond drilling, working on a sailboat and chemical factory, to make ends meet. However, his undeniable flair for acting took him to the Canadian movie industry after watching Brad Dourif in the movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
His Acting Career and Rise to Stardom
Bruce Greenwood started acting professionally in a Vancouver-based theatre and then made his small screen debut in the series, The Beachcombers in the year 1977. He followed it up with an appearance in the 1979 movie, Bear Island. In the late ’80s, he had roles in movies such as The Malibu Bikini Shop, The Climb, Wild Orchid, and Another Chance. Bruce first gained prominence through his role as Dr. Seth Griffin in TV series, St. Elsewhere (1986-1988).
He further scored more roles in Thick as Thieves, Disturbing Behavior, The Lost Son, and Double Jeopardy. The latter earned him a Blockbuster Entertainment Award nomination for Favorite Supporting Actor. Interestingly, the actor got his first Genie Award nomination for playing the character of Billy Ansel in the 1997 Canadian drama film, The Sweet Hereafter. Afterward, he portrayed the character of US President John F. Kennedy in Thirteen Days. The role, however, has been one of his most recognized roles to date.
His other notable works include Father’s Day, Passenger 57, Being Julia, The Republic of Love, Capote, I, Robot, Eight Below, Deja Vu, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, Star Trek, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, The Post, and Doctor Sleep, etc. Bruce Greenwood has also featured in TV movies such as Dirty Dancing, The Challenger, A Dog Named Christmas, Meltdown, The Magnificent Ambersons. Others include Knots Landing, Nowhere Man, The Summit, John From Cincinnati, Mad Men, and The People V. O. J Simpson: American Crime Story.
Asides acting, Bruce has also served as the executive producer of films like Donavan’s Echo and The Republic of Love. As a voice actor, his movie credits include American Dad!, Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, Young Justice, Batman: The Red Hood. His video game credits are Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 and Young Justice: Legacy. Bruce is currently playing the role of Dr. Randolph Bell in the series The Resident (2018-Present).
